Age Group

Age Group Strypers

The Age Group is an important developmental training group in the South Shore YMCA Strypers swimming program. This group is a key transition point as swimmers move from a foundation of swimming principles toward the expectations of the Senior training program. 

Requirements:

Swimmers must be able to complete the the Goals of the Gold Stryper Squad and complete the following:
-
- Swim 3 x 200m IM legally @ 4:15.
- Swim 500 yards freestyle @ 9.10.
- Perform all turns, open flip and push-offs efficiently.
- Swim 10 x 50 freestyle on 1:05.
- Understanding of pace clock.



Equipment: two pair of goggles, cap, short fins, kickboard, and a pull buoy.

(All equipment is the responsibility of the athlete and must be brought to every practice).

Goals:

Swimmer is working toward the following accomplishments:

- 6 x 200 IM @ 3.40.
- 4 x 100 kick @ 2.10.
- 10 x 100 freestyle @ 1.40.

and any one of the following:

- 6 x 100 freestyle @ 1.30.
- 6 x 100 backstroke @ 1.40.
- 6 x 100 breastroke @ 1.50.
- 6 x 100 butterfly @ 1.40.

Training Program:

Coaches and swimmers are focused primarily on stroke development with increased attention to aerobic conditioning and mental preparation.

Character Development and Life Skills

Championships Behaviour and Accountability:

1. The swimmer demonstrates the attributes of quality sportsmanship.
2. The swimmer takes responsibility for attendance, performance and practice habits and understands how these three relate to meet performance.


Work Ethic and Self-Discipline:

1. The swimmer meets the established attendance criteria.
2. The swimmer is aware that quality achievement and hard work are not mutually exclusive.
3.
 The swimmer does not partake in negative behaviour that will influence the training and/or racing performance of teammates.

Time Management:

1. Demonstrates an ability to balance school and outside activities.

Commitment and Loyalty:

1. The swimmer begins to learn the value of goal setting and supporting team goals.

Social Awareness:

1. The swimmer willingly and enthusiastically contributes to SSYS initiatives designed to increase awareness and practically assist those less fortunate.
