Silver Group Info

Coach Betsy Shoemaker

Silver Group: ages 8 and up.

This group transitions the swimmers from learning the competitive events and strokes to competitive training. Much of what we do in Silver lays the groundwork for more advanced skill knowledge and refinement in the years to come with focus on strong form, length in stroke and body line, smooth turns and starts, building a fit aerobic base, building self-confidence, attending swim meets and improving times, meeting and being with friends in a team environment while enjoying the sport of swimming.
The age range varies in this group. Skills and speed develop differently in boys and girls, maturity levels differ along with commitment and experience in competitive swimming. There are practices held Monday-Friday for 1 ½ hours. Practice yardage ranges from 1500 yards and less at the begining of the season and progresses about 15% each week to about 4000. Attendance of at least three practices a week is encouraged to maximize improvement. At this level participation in other sports such as, but not limited to, dance, basketball, and soccer is encouraged.

Training Focus and Goals in Silver Group for advancement:
· Set and achieve personal goals with parents/guardians and coaches to encourage enjoyment of swimming with longevity in the sport
· Learn how to use the pace clock and use send offs
· Follow directions given by coach and maintain focus for the entire practice
· Achieve at least three 11-12 PNS Gold times (this is for advancement; younger swimmers will focus on their respective age group and improve from there)
· Show leadership and sportsmanship within lanes
· Gain fitness and skill comparable to those in Gold
· Gain swim meet experience in all events
· Regularly maintain 5 days a week of practice
· Begin to understand and use stroke technique as a vital tool for speed and efficiency
· Develop good practice habits; remembering water bottles, bringing and picking up equipment, lane etiquette rules
· Maintain club responsibilities; volunteering, fundraising etc.
· Be a team player; maintain a positive attitude, encourage teammates, sit with teammates at swim meets, participate in team cheers, and wear team gear at swim meets.

Silver November Goals:

There are two swim meets in November. One is to be determined (TBD). The other is an Age Group Invite, a qualifying meet. Check to see if you qualify for this meet and sign up. If you don’t qualify go to the TBD meet. For the swimming meet, make sure you are signing up for events you like but also events you have not yet swum.

Our swimming will not see an increase in yardage. We’ll maintain an average of 3000-4500 yards everyday. Using drill, games, swims, and equipment, the skill work will be more refined and race focused on all four strokes. There will be more weekly timed swims, focusing on the 200 I.M and streamlines.

Silver December Goals:

Again there are two possible swimming meets this month. Divisional Championships are December 5-6. If you are qualified sign up for the Age Group Championships December 17-20.

After our mid-season Championship meet we will go into our Holiday Training schedule where our focus will be long aerobic swims. It will be tons of fun!

This guide designed to give an idea of what is expected of the silver group and a criteria for advancement. The coaches at Evergreen Swim club will work tirelessly within this template to ensure that each swimmer is getting the best training available to suit his or her goals and needs. Some swimmers may not meet every criterion for advancement. However, based on many factors such as fitness level, age, maturity, group cohesion and attendance coaches may place swimmers in a more or less advanced group if it is more beneficial to the swimmer and the respective training group as a whole.
