YOUTH SWIM LESSONS

Burlingame Aquatic Center is an outdoor, 50 meter pool, conveniently located at Burlingame High School. The facility is open year-round and the water temperature is maintained between 78-81 degrees and is handicap accessible. We also have a smaller, warmer To see a map of where we are located.

Our swim lesson program meets the needs of children of all ages and ability levels. We work on the principle that there is a place for everyone to learn, regardless of past experience or training. Our staff is dedicated to making sure that each child who comes into our program is given the attention, support, and instruction to improve and excel.

Our lesson program runs year-round, so no matter what time of year it is we have a place for you and your family in our program!

PROGRAM OVERVIEW & TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Our swim lesson program starts with safety and comfort in the water, giving each swimmer a strong foundation of skills that support development into a competent or even competitive-level swimmer and foster a love of swimming that will last a lifetime.

Baby & Me (age 6 mo - 36 mo)

This is a fun and rewarding experience for both parents and tots! This cheerful class combines water skills and play to create a positive and fun environment. The class is held in a warm water pool. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in the water. Swim diapers are MANDATORY for all non-potty trained tots. Classes will be held rain or shine. (There is only one level of this class.)

Novice Levels (Toddler Groups)

Novice 1 (Ages 2 - 5 years old)

To be accepted into Novice I, children must be able to enter the water without a parent or family member. This class is best for young children who are new to swim lessons or have beginner skills.

This class focuses on gaining confidence around water, reinforces basic water safety, and beginning swimming skills such as splashing, kicking, floating, blowing bubbles, big arms, and going under water. Instructors make the pool feel like a warm and safe place for swimmers to explore and have fun.

These classes are held in the small pool. Novice I swimmers begin class on the stairs. Parents are asked to sit away from the edge of the pool.

Novice 1 Skills Card

Novice 2 (Age 3- 6 years old)

To be accepted into Novice 2, swimmers must be able to put their face in the water and comfortably float and kick on their front and back with an instructor's assistance.

In this class, children will learn to float, kick, glide, and perform arm strokes unassisted on their front and back. Safety skills are reinforced.

These classes are held in the small pool. Novice 2 swimmers begin class on the stairs or swim docks and will transition to the pool edge when ready. During the lesson, children typically swim about 5 feet independently, or 10 feet with assistance. Parents are asked to sit away from the edge of the pool.

Novice 2 Skills Card

Intermediate Levels

Intermediate 1

(Average age 4-7 years)

To be accepted into Intermediate I, children must be comfortable in the water and be able to swim or kick 5-10 feet without assistance, as well as kick, float, and glide independently.

In this class, swimmers will improve their glides and kicks, and learn how to do front and back crawl. Side breathing and elementary backstroke are introduced.

These classes are held in the small pool. Intermediate I swimmers begin class on the swim docks and will transition to the pool edge when ready. Kids typically swim about 10 feet at a time. Parents are asked to sit away from the edge of the pool.

Intermediate 1 Skills Card

Intermediate 2

(Average age 4-8 years)

To be accepted into Intermediate 2, swimmers must be able to swim front crawl and back crawl independently for 10-15 feet and know the basics of side breathing.

In this level, children improve their front and back crawl and side breathing and learn breaststroke kick and dolphin kick. Treading water is introduced.

These classes may be held in small pool or big pool. Intermediate 2 swimmers begin class on the pool edge/wall. Students typically swim about 10-15 yards, or half a lap. Parents are asked to sit away from the edge of the pool.

Intermediate 2 Skills Card

Gators (8-12 year olds)

Gators (8-12 year olds)

This level is for beginning and non-swimmers who are older and have not taken lessons before. This class is set up to take older kids through floating, kicking and basic swimming skills and prepare them for the Advanced group lessons. Students enrolled in this class must not be afraid of the water, and be ready to learn to swim. (Warm pool or Lap pool depending on class and skills introduced.)

Advanced Levels

Advanced 1

(Ages 5 years and older)

This advanced level is designed for children who have previous swimming experience. Students in this class should be able to perform all the skills in Novice & Intermediate classes.

To be accepted into Advanced 1, swimmers must be able to swim half a lap, or about 15 yards, of unassisted front crawl, back crawl, dolphin and breaststroke kick, as well as tread for 30 seconds. These classes are held in the big pool, primarily in the shallower lanes. Some days students may transition to the deeper area for treading water, diving and other deep water skills.

Advanced 1 Skills Card

Advanced 2

(Ages 6 years and older)

This level prepares athletes to further improve their swimming skills and endurance. Children will improve their stroke technique for front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke kick, as well as learn the butterfly kick. Swimmers will also be introduced to flip turns and a standing dive. Lessons are taught in the big pool.

This level is NOT for swimmers who still need assistance getting across the pool. This level is for confident swimmers that need skills refinement.

To be accepted into Advanced 2, swimmers must be able to swim a full lap, or 25 yards, of unassisted front crawl and back crawl, and they must have a basic understanding of breaststroke and dolphin kick. They must also be able to tread for 1 minute.

Advanced 2 Skills Card

Pre-Team 1

Pre-Team 1

(Ages 8 years and Under)

Pre-Team 1 is designed for 8 and under swimmers who are not ready for the swim team but swim competently enough to have passed out of our Advanced level swim lessons. Swimmers in this group continue refining their (already-developed) technique in freestyle and backstroke and have a good understanding of breaststroke and butterfly to build upon.

Swimmers enrolled in Pre-Team 1 should be able to swim two laps (50 yards) of freestyle and backstroke confidently and be familiar with all four competitive strokes. This level is NOT for swimmers still needing assistance getting across the pool. This level is for confident swimmers who need to work on technique in all four strokes, some level of endurance-building, experience swimming with a larger group in a lane on interval send-offs, and other swim-team preparatory skills and knowledge. Because this Pre-Team 1 level is critical for developing swim-team-ready skills, swimmers may repeat this class over multiple sessions before they are ready to be moved onto the swim team.

Pre-Team 1 lessons last 45 minutes and are held in the big pool, though most lessons will be held in the shallower lanes. Some days, students may be in the deeper end of the pool for treading water, diving or other deep water skills. Swimmers who graduate from Pre-Team 1 are eligible for the swim team and will not be passed until it is determined they could participate in the appropriate age-group swim team level.

Pre-Team 2

Pre-Team 2

(Ages 9 years and older)

Pre-Team 2 is designed for 9 and over swimmers who are not ready for the swim team but swim competently enough to have passed out of our Advanced level swim lessons (and have possibly moved from Pre-Team 1). Swimmers in this group continue refining their (already-developed) technique in freestyle and backstroke and have a solid foundation in breaststroke and butterfly to build upon.

Swimmers enrolled in Pre-Team 2 should be able to swim two laps (50 yards) of freestyle and backstroke confidently and one lap (25 yards) of breaststroke and butterfly. This level is NOT for swimmers still needing assistance getting across the pool. This level is for confident swimmers who need to work on technique in all four strokes, some level of endurance-building, experience swimming with a larger group in a lane on interval send-offs, and other swim-team preparatory skills and knowledge. Because this Pre-Team 2 level is critical for developing swim-team-ready skills, swimmers may repeat this class over multiple sessions before they are ready to be moved onto the swim team.

Pre-Team 2 lessons last 60 minutes and are held in the big pool, though most lessons will be held in the shallower lanes. Some days, students may be in the deeper end of the pool for treading water, diving or other deep water skills. Swimmers who graduate from Pre-Team 2 are eligible for the swim team and will not be passed until it is determined they could participate in the appropriate age-group swim team level.
