Swim Groups

(MAKO 2020 - 2021 Season)

Registration for MAKOS in Summer Session Two will open on July 27th, for all other MAKOS on August 3rd, and for new families on August 10th.  Please review the following important information regarding registration:

  • Family Discounts: Swimmer with highest dues fees will pay in full, and additional swimmers in same family will receive a 5% discount off of their dues.
  • All new swimmers must be evaluated.  Contact Coach Heather by clicking HERE for more information. 
  • We are using an Online Registration System.  In addition, we will continue to use an online platform for paying Dues, Meet Fees, and other incidental charges.  Payments will be due on:
    • September 1st, 2020
    • November 1st, 2020
    • January 1st, 2021
  • This year most groups will swim from September to May.  Those swimmers that are in the pool 5x or more per week will be swimming from September through July.   In addition, we are offering Fall and Spring Sessions for the Junior Blue I and High School Blue groups.  These will be 8 week sessions (Sept/Oct and April/May) at the outdoor pool at the Country Club of FairfaxThis will be the only option for families that are not swimming the entire 2020-21 season.
  • NO REFUND POLICY: The Mason Makos Swim Team has a firm NO REFUND POLICY concerning registration fees and program fees.  The Mason Makos Swim Team financial commitments involve annual pool and staff contracts based on swimmer registrations at the beginning of each season.  Therefore, the Team provides NO REFUND OF ANY REGISTRATION FEES OR PROGRAM FEES.  This policy covers and includes, without limitation, requests for refunds and/or cancellations as the result of any changes in Mason Makos Swim Team personnel, including changes in the team’s coaching or management staff.  In addition, NO REFUND OF REGISTRATION FEES AND/OR PROGRAM FEES can be made for swimmers who are out of the water due to illness, injury, overcommitment, decreased interest or problems that may take them out of the water.

The Mason Makos Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. The Mason Makos Swim Team's goal is to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Mini MAKO Blue
Recommended Ages: 9 yrs old & Under
Note: All new Mini Mako Blue swimmers must be evaluated.
Check the Calendar and News for information about the evaluations.
Requirements: Must be able to swim 2-3 strokes legally, unassisted in deep water. Not a "learn-to-swim" program.  
Description: Extensive stroke mechanics work, plus conditioning. 1 or 2 practices/week.
Goal: Legal strokes, starts, and turns.

Mini MAKO Gold FULL

Junior Blue I
Recommended Ages: 9 to 12 yrs. old
Requirements: Ability to swim all four strokes legally, and complete a legal 100 yd I.M. Must also have a legal Freestyle flip turn and racing start. This is not a "learn-to-swim" program. 
Description: Extensive stroke drill work and technique development. Start and turn refinement, and transition turns for the 100 IM. Some conditioning, but emphasis will mainly be on 25s and 50s where stroke correction will occur.
Goal: More efficient strokes, conditioning, and race techniques.

Junior Blue II
Recommended Ages: 9 to 12 yrs. old
Requirements:

Legal in all four strokes along with legal turns.  Ability to complete 100 yards of all four strokes and the 100 IM. Coach's Approval Required.  

Description: Continued stroke drill work, incorporating them into sets. Learn importance of underwater swimming off walls during turns. Introduction to race strategies and proper nutrition.
Goal: More efficient strokes, increased conditioning, and race techniques. Must complete a 200 Free and 200 IM by the end of the season.  Achieving Junior Olympic time standards.

Junior Gold- FULL
Recommended Ages: 9 to 12 yrs. old
Requirements: Must have achieved or be close to achieving Junior Olympic level qualification time standards.  Coach's Approval required.
Description: Continued stroke drill work while incorporating them into sets. Swimmers will learn the importance of swimming relaxed. Continued review of the importance of turns and underwater swimming off of walls. Increased conditioning. Physically more demanding than our other programs for this age group.
Goal: Stronger, more efficient strokes. Junior Olympic Championships qualification in mulitple events.  Must compete in all 200 events and the 500 freestyle by the end of the season.

High School Blue
Recommended Ages: 13 - 18 year old
Requirements: Ability to complete a proficient 200 I.M.  Meet participation is optional.
Description: Designed for swimmers who want to compete for their high school swim teams. This group is also used to supplement their HS season, and also for those who wish to compete in PVS/USA meets. Endurance training, with some stroke and turn work. 
Goal: Stronger, more efficient strokes. Substantially increased conditioning. PVS Junior and/or Senior Championships qualification.

Senior Prep - FULL

Requirements: Junior Olympic-level qualification time standards and/or coach's approval.
Description: Strokes, starts and turns drills are incorporated into the swimming sets during practice. Continued review of the importance of turns, and underwater swimming off of walls. Increased conditioning. Swimmers will also learn about proper nutrition. Dryland included on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
This program is designed to help the transition from our Junior swimming groups to the Senior level.
Goal: Stronger, more efficient strokes; Increased conditioning; Junior Olympic Championships qualification in additional events.  MUST compete in ALL offered events, including 200s in all strokes, 500 free, 1,000 Free, and 400IM by the end of the Swim Season.

Senior Blue - FULL
Requirements: 9th grade and above with PVS Senior Championships qualification times or with Coach's Approval.
Description: This is the first level of introduction to the Senior group.  This group is for swimmers who are serious about the sport and want to practice five times a week.  Attendance at ALL practices is expected.  Intense training: strokes, starts, and turns refinement. Monthly meetings will be held to discuss goals and upcoming competitions.
Goal: Optimized strokes, turns, starts, and high endurance. Additional Junior/Senior Champs or Junior National Championship qualifications.  MUST compete in PVS/USA meets and compete in ALL offered events, including 1,000 Free, and 400IM by the end of the Swim Season.

Description: This group is for dedicated swimmers who acknowledge that swimming is their MAIN and ONLY sport and they are considering swimming in college.  Attendance at ALL practices is expected.  Intense training: strokes, starts, and turns refinement. Monthly meetings will be held to discuss goals and upcoming competitions.  
Goal: Optimized strokes, turns, starts, and high endurance. Junior or Senior National Championships, and Olympic Trial qualification.
