Course Descriptions

Diving Coach Deb Shelton has been involved in springboard diving for over 30 years, as a competitor and as a coach. Deb is from Pennsylvania and competed in swimming as well as diving in high school and college.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education with an emphasis in Kinesiology and Aquatics in 1981 and coached back east before marrying in 1985. Deb also coaches high school diving at Inglemoor, Bothell and Woodinville. This is Deb’s 6th year at Aqua Club. Welcome back!

 

 

Diving Course Descriptions

Instruction will provide an environment for safe learning while encouraging the development of skills with attainable goals personalized to each student.  Emphasis on deck and board safety is included in each class.

Beginner 1 (12-12:30)

Course requirements: No prior diving experience is necessary.  Ages 7-12 Must have passed swim test.

This Beginning course is a half hour course that will include an introduction to diving safety (including deck and board safety), body awareness and alignment upon entry, fundamental drills on dry land and the diving board. Class will introduce the forward approach with one and three-step hurdles, front and back line-ups, front dive, (optional) back dive with assistance or independently, introduction to forward somersault via "watermelons."

Beginner 2 (12-12:30)

Course requirements:  All participants need to have prior diving experience or successful completion of Beginner 1. Ages 7-12

This Course, also a half hour long, will include diving safety (including deck and board safety), body awareness and alignment upon entry, board work, take-offs and fundamental drills on dry land and the diving board. Class will include the forward approach with one and three-step hurdles, back press and jump, front and back line-ups, front dive, back dive with assistance or independently, introduction to forward somersault via "watermelons," forward somersault and back somersault if ready.

Intermediate  (11:15-12)
Course requirements:  All participants need prior diving experience or permission of Coach Deb or Coach Matuesz.

This Course, from 11:15-12, will include a review diving safety (including deck and board safety), body awareness and alignment upon entry, emphasis on board work, take-offs and dry land. Class will include the forward approach with three-step hurdles, back press and jump, front and back line-ups, front dive, independent back dive.  Emphasis will be placed on front and back takeoffs with an introduction to forward and backward optional dives including somersaults, front 1 1/2s and inward dives. Those who are ready may learn a few twisting dives.

Advanced  (10:30-11:15)

Course requirements:  Divers must be able to do a successful inward dive and forward 1 ½ somersault to be in this class.

This Course, from 10:30-11:15, will include a review diving safety (including deck and board safety), body awareness and alignment upon entry, emphasis on board work, take-offs and dry land. Class will include basic and optional dives from each of the five diving groups: Front, back, reverse, inward and twisting.
