Swim
Meets
We participate in a variety of swim meets ranging from the most
basic novice level dual meet to statewide and regional championship
meets. Many
meets are
designed to be learning experiences. Winning means improving
start, stroke, turns, pace, and time. Racing, the ability to
race, and the strategies in racing are a close
second priority.
Beating someone else is a bonus but not overly emphasized
except for higher levels of competition. We try to attend
invitational meets (or BRW) about every 4 to 6 weeks. We may hold novice level
meets at our home pool.
Parents are responsible for entering swim meets. Usually there is about a
three to a four week advanced notice of meets. All meet forms can be downloaded
from this web site under the SCHEDULE button or under the CALENDAR
section. Meet forms will also be copied and put in each swimmers
folder located at the pool. Please circle the events that you wish
to swim and make a check out to Dolphin Aquatics. Fees can be found
on the meet form. Once the entry is returned to the communication
box with a check and the events circled the coaches will enter the
swimmers in
appropriate events and times.
A copy of the events entered and the amount paid will be placed in
the swimmers folder. This is your receipt that the swimmer has been
entered. If you have not received anything that means that the
swimmer has not been entered in the meet and the coach should be
notified as soon as possible. Parents are responsible for ensuring
their swimmers are entered. Make sure you get your
receipt.
Swim meets are preceded by a warm up period of 60 to ninety
minutes. The
coaches will tell parents what time swimmers are expected to be at
the meet and will be posted on our bulletin board that is placed at
the entrance to the pool. Once at the meet, the coach
will manage all the warm-up swimming, speak with swimmers before
each swim, and review the swim with the swimmer immediately
after. Parents
should find a comfortable place to view the meet away from the
immediate side of the pool. (Most of our swim parents
sit together.)
Parents are not to engage in coaching their children at the
meets. However,
parents are welcome to speak with coaches at
appropriate times during the
meet.
CLASSIFICATION AND TYPES OF
MEETS
A variety of competitions are available to our swimmers to help
them
gradually and logically progress through there swimming
years.
1.
Classified Age Group Program:
There
are seven age groups in USS:8 & under, 10 &
under, 11 & 12, 13 & 14, 15 & 16, 17 & up,
(sometimes 15 and up) and Senior. The Senior age group includes any
age USS registered swimmer who meets a time
standard.
2. Within each age group there are different
"ability levels" or "classifications," (Blue, Red,
White).
Time standards for each are established by
United States Swimming/Southern California Swimming. In order to
swim in a certain
classification, a swimmer must have achieved the appropriate
qualifying time, which can be found in any copy of the Southern
California Swim Guidebook .This guidebook is sold through the team
for a nominal fee or you can buy copy at Swim Depot or look
up
socalswim.org
on line.
This permits fair and challenging competition at all levels. Meets
may combine classifications to swimmers to compete in a complete
event schedule. For example, there may be a "Red/White" meet in
which a swimmer could swim the "White" breaststroke event and the
"Red" freestyle events in the same meet. A swimmer does not need to
meet any qualifying standard to participate for a
“White” standard.
All first time swimmers are eligible to swim under the
“White” standard
