The Basics

There are 5 competitive swimming races that each swimmer can do with varying distances. They are Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Individual Medley (IM). The IM features all four of the other strokes. For example a 100 IM would be a 25 Fly, 25 Back, 25 Breast, 25 Free.

Meets
At every swim meet there will be a variety of events and distances that each swimmer can do, that will depend on their age and ability. Each swimmer will have a limit of events that he or she can do in one day, this will depend on the meets rules. Meets generally are 2-4 days during a weekend. The length of the meet varies from meet to meet. Most meets are 2-3 days with the championship meets generally 3-4 days. Usually each meet is made up of two sessions per day with a swimmer only competiting in one session per day. The session that they will compete in will vary depending on age and ability. A session usually only last about 4 hours. Here are two articles for parents new to swim meets.
