Chad La Tourette (Mission Viejo, Calif.) cruised to an easy win in the men’s 800m free at the 2009 U.S. Open Championships when he posted the fastest time ever swum on American soil in 7:47.20.
 
Over the past 18 months, the swimming world has been a frenzy of controversy over the emergence of technology in swimsuits.  At the recent World Championships in Rome, the constant and overwhelming refrain about suits, echoed the volume and intensity of the last time we were in Rome for a World Championships, when the topic was doping....drugs distorting our sport...in 1994.

Olympians Margaret Hoelzer, Kate Ziegler and Elaine Breeden will head to Federal Way, Wash., August 4-8, for the 2009 U.S. Open Championships. Competition will take place at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center and will feature a field of more than 800 swimmers.

ROME – Ariana Kukors broke the American record this morning in the prelims of the women’s 200m IM at the 2009 FINA World Championships, her time of 2:08.53 just eight-hundredths of a second off the world record held by Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Rice of Australia. Kukors qualified as the top seed heading into tonight’s semifinals. Finals of that event will be held Monday night.

The 2008 Speedo Short Course Junior Championships drew to a close Saturday in Austin, Texas. Amber McDermott of Salmon Bay collected her fourth win of the meet on day 3, taking first in the women’s 1650-yard free with a time of 16:02.79.

McDermott carries winning streak into second day of Junior Nationals

Amber McDermott continued her winning streak on Day 2 of the 2008 Speedo Junior Nationals in Austin, Texas. After collecting two wins on the first night of competition, McDermott kicked off the second night with a meet record in the women’s 400y IM with a time of 4:11.36.

The 2008 Speedo Junior National Championships got off to a blistering start this evening in Austin, Texas. A total of 10 individual meet records fell on the opening night, with Amber McDermott responsible for four of those records.

Michael Phelps has been nominated for the United States Sports Academy’s 2008 Male Athlete of the Year. The academy invites the world to vote for its Male and Female Athlete of the year on the organization’s Web site. Ballots will be open between now and Dec. 24. The winners will be announced on Christmas day.
