| When
you are ready to compete in swim meets, you can choose from a list
of meets that the team will be participating in. Bring your
goggles, team suit, and team cap to the meet in time for warm ups.
Then hang out on deck with the rest of the team. All you have to do
is swim your best. Ask your team mates and they will gladly help
you get around your first meet.

Once You’ve Joined
VSC:
You’ll be part of the VSC family. Your swimmer
will be expected to regularly attend practice, and to bring a good
attitude (which is easy since swimming is great fun).
You will receive our monthly
newsletter,
“The Wavelength”, by email. You can print a
paper copy, read the whole thing online, or view the current
columns on the website. Previous issues are always available
online too.
You will also receive a monthly
bill reminder by email. You can view your account status and
print an invoice by signing in at the VSC website and clicking on
“$ My Invoice/Payment”. All payments are due by
the 15th of each month. Family discounts are given for three
or more swimmers; see the VSC Dues Schedule for complete
information.
As a member of USA
Swimming your swimmer will also recieve USA Swimming’s
own "Splash" Magazine.
The VSC web site features a special "Team Members
Only" page with special links for Team Announcements, Carpools,
Lost & Found, and a For Sale page. You can track your own meet performance and best times using
the "My Meet Results" feature of the web site. If college swimming
is in your future, you’ll find advice and planning tools on
the "College Bound" page.
Are There Fundraisers?
Vancouver Swim Club is supported mainly by your
monthly dues, an annual Swim-A-Thon fundraiser, and a fireworks
booth fundraising event. These fundraisers are vital to VSC
and allow us to hire highly qualified, professional coaches and
provide a variety of practice times while keeping our dues
low.
Each family is
asked to support these fundraisers with a minimum level of
participation or be charged a non-participation
fee. There may be other minor fund raisers as needed during
the year. Complete information on the VSC fundraising policy can be
found in the
Registration Agreement.
In Addition, every family is
expected to supply one lane timer on each day that their
swimmer competes in a meet. Timing
is easy, but without enough timers the meet cannot go on,
so please don’t hesitate to time.
About Practices:
We have practice five days a week, year round,
except for pool maintenance breaks and an occasional Friday when
there is a meet that most of our swimmers, as well as coaches, are
attending. We swim at
Marshall Community Center Pool, a 25 yard, six lane pool with a
9 foot deepwell. Our practice times are staggered throughout the
evening to make the best use of pool time. See the
Practice Schedule for times and days available for each
Group.
Once you have joined our team, your child should come to practice
prepared with a water bottle, suit and goggles as a minimum.
Please refer to the
Equipment List for further advice and equipment
recommendations.
Although each practice group has a
specified number of practices available per week, it is up to each
family to decide which days to practice, and how many
times to practice each week, up to the
maximum for the level. Keep in mind that the more your swimmer
practices, the better prepared they will be for swimming in a
meet.
Swim Meets:
Twice a year you will be given a list with the
appropriate meets for your swimmer circled. You will then decide
which meets you would like to attend and return the list to the
coach. The head coach takes care of registering the team. All you
have to do is show up ready to swim. Meet fees are paid on your
behalf by VSC and then billed to you with your monthly
dues.Parents are
obligated to assist with lane timing (a very easy skill to learn)
at every meet their child swims in.
By being affiliated with Oregon Swimming, Inc., VSC is able to
participate in the great selection of swim meets located around
Portland and Western Oregon. If you have questions regarding
swim meets, please feel free to ask a board member, another parent,
or one of our coaches.
Our team handbook, which is available on request, and has some
great information on our competitive swim program, by-laws, parent
roles, coach role, nutrition, what to bring to meets, and driving
directions to most pools. Please remember to keep a copy of your
Registration Agreement. It provides a detailed description of our
policies and procedures.
If you need more information than
what you’ve found here, or if you want to make an appointment
for a tryout please drop us a line!
