Interview: Getting to Know Coach Drew
Drew joined NOVA's full-time staff in Fall of 2006 and quickly worked his way to being placed in charge of both the Age Group Silver and Age Group Development Gold groups.
However, Drew started his career at NOVA in 1992 as an 11-year old age grouper and swam at the club for seven years. While swimming at NOVA, he was a state champion in several events, attended numerous Eastern Zones meets, where he was also a winner, and became a USA Swimming Junior National qualifier. In spite of these accolades, Drew feels his biggest achievement was helping get the first pool built by participating in too many fundraisers to count! Drew attended Virginia Tech on a swimming scholarship and began his coaching career as a summer league coach.
Drew has become an integral part of NOVA's age group program in a short time. Many of his nine- and ten-year-old swimmers have recorded National Top 16 times, state records and individual state championships. In addition, he assists with the club's Novice Gold group.
Along with his various coaching duties, Drew plays important roles behind the scenes. He helps keep the facility running smoothly as Mark Kutz's right-hand man. Last, he acts as the coach's representative in meet hosting duties.
In his spare time, Drew enjoys spending time at the beach with family and friends, watching Virginia Tech football and working in the yard at his new home.
