Lisa "Mom" Schertler

Coach

Email

Coach Lisa grew up in Palo Alto and began swimming at age 11. On her first team, the Palo Alto YMCA Swim Team she swam with the 8 and Under’s and then finally worked her way into the Sr. distance lane. Later in High School, she joined the Los Altos Aquatics Club (now LAMVAC) where she swam the later part of High School and through college. In addition to swimming year round, she swam for Gunn High School, qualifying for CCS all four years, and enjoyed participating with the Greenmeadow Summer Swim team. At Junior National’s of her Senior summer, Lisa was offered a swimming scholarship to UNLV where she swam everything “distance” for three years and studied Physical Education.

Lisa is a Certified Coach with US swimming and has been coaching Age Group and Master’s Swimming for various teams in and around the Sacramento and Bay Area since 1987. Although coaching swimming is one of her favorite things to do, Lisa is a Credentialed teacher and has taught K-8 Physical Education and First Grade for over 20 years. Last year Coach Lisa worked with Jr. Bronze (her favorite age group and level; because that’s when she started swimming). She currently has been seen subbing in for the other coaches when they are out and has been the dryland coach for SUNN swimmers as well.

Lisa is very excited to be given the opportunity to teach swimmers of all ages and levels how to be better swimmers. But best of all, she really enjoys watching all of the swimmers progress and grow as athletes and people, from their experiences in swimming.

Alex Romanko

Coach

Email

Alex is former collegiate water polo player and current “swammer.” Alex joins SUNN entering his ninth season coaching within Pacific Swimming, having coached and taught every age group and every ability level (from learn-to-swim to Far Westerns champions). He is an active member of Pacific Swimming’s All-Star Developmental Program, and is the current Zone 1-North All-Stars Head Coach.

Alex is a local kid and even finds himself coaching at his old middle school! He is a graduate of Homestead High School, where he both swam and played water polo on varsity all four years. During the spring, you can find Alex back on the Mustang pool deck coaching his alma mater. While Alex grew up playing soccer and baseball, his little sister grew up swimming for both SUNN and Fairbrae! The numerous local ties mean that a sense of community is very important to him, and one of the fundamental factors that motivate and drive him.

Alex is very passionate about his work, and believes that understanding and explaining the “why” in swimming the most critical aspect of his job. His swimmers are encouraged to not get too caught up in results, but to focus on the process. He acknowledges that swimming is a tough sport (the toughest!) and strives to coach the kids that not only work the hardest, but have the most fun.

After a 12 year career as an Age-group and Senior swimmer, which includes 5 years of club Water Polo and 4 years of Varsity Swimming and Water Polo, Andy began teaching swimming in 1984 and 2 years later began working as an Age-group coach. Away from the pool, Andy enjoys hiking, cooking and traveling with his fiancée Lisa. Andy, Lisa and Murphy the cat plan to add a new furry four-legged canine friend to the family soon.
