Welcome to Spokane Area Swimming (SAS)
Developing fast swimmers & friendships for a lifetime!
Spokane Area Swimming (SAS) is a year round competitive swim team, providing professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. Our team is about giving every member the opportunity to improve swimming skills and achieve success at their level of ability, from novice to International competition.
Our coaches are trained & certified by USA Swimming, the most comprehensive program for youth coaches of any sport in the United States. We are committed to developing young athletes into successful adults, placing a child’s self-esteem as our top priority.
Our mission is to have a nationally recognized competitive swimming program that develops young athletes into successful adults, emphasizing individual goal setting, sportsmanship, family involvement, and the pursuit of excellence.
We are a USA Swimming member club and a member of the local swim committee (LSC) Inland Empire Swimming Association (IES). SAS athletes compete in meets conducted according to USA Swimming rules. In general, our swimmers compete in meets that are held locally and within our LSC. However, our more advanced swimmers may also compete regionally, nationally, or even internationally.
With swimmers ranging from ages 5 to 21, we practice between three and nine times per week depending on commitment level, group level, and swim season. From September through April, the short course swimmers swim in a 25 yard pool (known as short course yards, or SCY) and practice is held indoors at the Valley and North YMCA's. During the long course season which is May through August,(known as long course meters, or LCM) swimmers swim in a 50 meter pool. Practices for LCM are held outdoors at Witter Pool.
Our swimmers work hard during practice and meets are a great way to measure their progress. Plus, meets are a fun place to hang-out with teammates! Parents have just as much fun cheering on the kids and interacting with other parents in our SAS family. However, meets are not mandatory. Information about meets will be emailed periodically, but you can also look under our Meets & Events tab. You must be logged on to your account to sign up for meets. We also have occasional non-swim activities - just for fun!
Team Organization & Governance
SAS is a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors comprised of parent volunteers who are elected by a majority vote at our Annual Meeting. The board meets monthly, and every parent is encourage to attend. The team’s main source of revenue is our swimmer membership dues. Revenue is also realized from hosting swim meets, and our annual fundraiser. These funds are primarily used to pay for coaches’ salaries & pool rental fees; coach travel expenses; coaches, officials’ & board registrations & insurance; our Team Unify web site; and other business costs.
