Blue Group:
Bally Total Fitness, Carlsbad Boys and Girls
Club and JCC
Schedule: Offered 2-3 times a week for 1
hour.
Qualifications: Must have passed White
group or have Coach’s recommendation.
Goals: This group is designed to continue
perfecting the 4 competitive strokes, starts, turns and finishes.
The main focus is developing proper technique while being
introduced to some aspects of conditioning. Most Blue swimmers will
compete in "C," "B" or "A" meets.

minutes
Qualifications: Must have passed the Red
group or have Coach’s recommendation.
Goals: This group is designed to continue
the swimmer’s development in the 4 competitive strokes. Games
and drills will be used to meet these goals. White
attends either Novice Fun Events, Summer League or "C" level meets
depending on ability level.

Red Group:
Bally Total

Schedule: Offered 3 times a week for 30
minutes.
Qualifications: Ability to swim 1 length
of the pool in both freestyle with side breathing. Know backstroke
and have a legal breastroke whip kick.
Goals: This group is designed to introduce
the swimmers to the 4 competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke,
breastroke and butterfly). This is achieved through close
instruction with each swimmer through the use of drills and games
to make each practice fun. Red attends Novice Fun Events and Summer
League
Red Group Bally Total Fitness
Swim Coach: M,W & F Janne Shahan
High School Prep
Group: Bally Total Fitness
Schedule: Offered 3 times a week for
75 minutes.
Qualifications: Must be at least 13 years
of age and have Coach’s recommendation.
Goals: The focus is general conditioning
and technical knowledge of the 4 competitive strokes, starts, turns
and finishes.
High School Prep Group Bally Total Fitness

Age Group 3: Carlsbad Municipal Pool and
JCC
Schedule: Offered 5 times a week for 1
hour.
Qualifications: Must be able to train 50
meters freestyle on 1:00 interval and be legal in all 4
competitive strokes, starts, turns and finishes or have
Coach’s recommendation.
Goals: Focus is on developing the
swimmer’s skills and technique in preparation for
competition. Each workout contains aerobic sets as well as
technique drills.
Age Group 3: Carlsbad

Age Group 2:

Schedule: Offered 5 times a week for 90
minutes.
Qualifications: Must be able to complete 8
X 100m free on 1:45 and 6 X 100m IMs on 2:00 or have Coach’s
recommendation.
Goals: At this level a greater portion of
practice will be devoted to general conditioning, in preparation
for more demanding races and competitions. Technical drills
emphasizing efficiency are still incorporated into each
workout.

AGE 1 Group: Carlsbad Municipal Pool and

Schedule: Offered 5 times a week for
90-120 minutes.
Qualifications: Must be at least
10-yrs-old and have Coach’s recommendation.
Goals: The focus is on the continued
mental and physical development the athlete achieved in AG2. The
extra time in the water is devoted towards conditioning in
preparation for local and regional competition.

Varsity

week during the fall and winter months.
Qualifications: Must be at least 14
yrs-old and have Coach’s recommendation.
Goals: This level will
be devoted to general conditioning, in preparation for High
School swimming and competitions. Technical drills emphasizing
efficiency are still incorporated into each workout.
Varsity Group: Carlsbad Municipal Pool Coach: Jim Barton
Senior Development
Group: JCC
Schedule: Offered 5 times a week for
90-120 minutes.
Qualifications: Must be at least 13 years
of age and have Coach’s recommendation.
Goals: The focus is general conditioning
and technical knowledge of the 4 competitive strokes, starts, turns
and finishes. Preparation for HS swimming, or the
senior team can be accomplished at this level.
Senior
Development Group: JCC Coach: Greg Spire
(M,W,F) and Skye Johnson (T,Th)
Senior Group: JCC
Schedule: 6-9 times a week for 150-180
minutes.
Qualifications: Must have proven to the
coaches a devotion to training and competition as well as a skill
level appropriate to the current Senior group. Must be in the
Pre-Senior program a minimum of 3 months or have Coach’s
recommendation.
Goals: The swimmer must have chosen to
commit to a very demanding and intensified training program as
dryland and morning workouts are required. These swimmers prepare
for local, regional, national and international
competitions.
