Swim Groups

The B.R.Ryall YMCA Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the B.R.Ryall YMCA Swim Team to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

DEVELOPMENTAL Program
Yellow A
Substantially legal in 3 of 4 strokes for 25 yards

Technique instruction will focus on executing legal breaststroke and butterfly, polishing freestyle and backstroke skills, and learning proper starts, turns and finishes. The swimmers will be introduced to dryland activities focused on improving motor skills, coordination and body awareness.
There are no practice requirements, but 2-3 practices per week are recommended to develop and retain the learned skills.

Yellow B
Minimally complete 1 length of free and 1 length of another competitive stroke in a substantially legal manner

Technique instruction will focus on executing legal breaststroke and butterfly, polishing freestyle and backstroke skills, and learning proper starts, turns and finishes. The swimmers will be introduced to dryland activities focused on improving motor skills, coordination and body awareness.
There are no practice requirements, but 2-3 practices per week are recommended to develop and retain the learned skills.

Age Group Program – swimmers 12 and under
White
Able to complete a legal 100 IM and a freestyle flip turn

Technique instruction will focus on developing and maintaining proper technique in all four competitive strokes, starts, turns and finishes. The primary goals of this group will be to refine technique, develop the ability to maintain proper form while beginning to increase endurance levels and develop skills necessary to succeed in a swim team environment, such as timely arrival and lane etiquette. The swimmers will continue with dryland activities focused on improving motor skills, coordination and body awareness.
There are no practice requirements, but 3 practices per week are recommended to develop and retain the learned skills.

Green
Able to complete a legal 200 IM, a backstroke flip turn and certified to execute a racing start in shallow water.

Technique instruction will focus on polishing the skills and technique of all four competitive strokes, starts, turns and finishes. The primary goals of this group will be to refine technique and develop the ability to maintain proper form while beginning to increase endurance levels. The swimmers will continue with dryland activities focused on improving motor skills, coordination and body awareness.

There are no practice requirements, but a minimum of 3 practices per week are recommended to develop and retain the learned skills.


Blue
10 and under “BB” time in a minimum of 2 strokes or IM

Swimmers will continue to focus on technique, but will begin to transition to increased training sets to gain endurance and develop an understanding of race strategy. In this group swimmers will continue to master good practice habits such as timely arrival, lane etiquette, pace clock reading, and much more. The swimmers will continue with dryland activities focused on improving motor skills, coordination and body awareness. Group members will also begin to make commitments to their swimming. Decisions about attendance, quality of work, and attitude will be made by each athlete and his or her parents. Attendance and attitude will be used to determine advancement to the next group. Athletes begin to develop goal setting skills.

There are no practice attendance requirements, but his group should begin to make a more advanced commitment. The recommendation is 3-4 practices per week.

Black
10 and under “AA” time in a minimum of 2 strokes

Commitment – The expectation of this group is that they are competing at the JO/Y State level and ultimately the Zone level. To compete at this level the commitment to the sport should begin to solidify and as such attendance at the offered water and land practices is expected. It is expected that those in this group maintain a minimum of 80% attendance; attendance will be taken and attendance records will be considered when selecting relays or making decisions regarding group placement when the athlete moves into the senior program.


Senior Program – swimmers 13 and over

Senior B  Minimally able to complete a set of 5 x 200 free and 5 x 100 IM @ :20-:30 rest

This group is intended for those swimmers who are dedicated to improving their skills in swimming with an eye to either becoming more competitive in the sport, continue their competitive swimming career in a less regimented manner or using swimming as cross-training for their primary sport. Training will emphasize the development of good technique, good work habits, attendance, and a positive attitude, which will lead to higher levels of achievement and more challenging training. The Senior B group is encouraged to attend a mimimum of 70% of practices offered.

Senior A

13-14 “B” time in a minimum of 2 strokes
The expectations for this group are to 1) prepare for the move to the Pre-National Group and 2) compete at the Regional level. It is expected that those in this group maintain a minimum of 80% attendance; however, it is recommended that all offered water and land practices are attended to ensure adequate preparation for competition at the regional level. As with the other groups, attendance will be taken and attendance records will be taken into consideration when selecting relays and during consideration of a potential move to the Pre-National Group.


Pre National
13-14 “A” time in a minimum of 2 strokes

Commitment – The expectations for this group are to 1) prepare for the move to the National Group and 2) compete at the JO/Y State level. It is expected that those in this group maintain a minimum of 80% attendance; however, it is recommended that all offered water and land practices are attended to ensure adequate preparation for competition at the state level and to prepare for national competition. As with the National Group, attendance will be taken and attendance records will be taken into consideration when selecting relays and during consideration of a potential move to the National Group.


National
13-14 “AAA” 2 strokes or Y National Cut

Commitment – there is a high level of commitment required of the athlete that is part of this group. To compete at the Y National level and beyond requires daily focused effort in the pool, during land workouts and in balancing training with school. It is expected that those in this group maintain a minimum of 90% attendance and it is strongly recommended that all offered water and land practices are attended. Attendance will be taken throughout the season and attendance records will be taken into consideration when selecting relays or participation in Elite Meets, i.e. Grand Prix, Junior Nationals, US Open, etc.

College
Description:
The BR RYALL College group is for returning college swimmers committed to maintaining their training during the summer, in preparation for their college swim seasons.
Focus:
Training will be geared toward preparing swimmers for the Speedo Sectional and Jr./Sr. National
competitions and will be specialized based on each swimmers individual needs.
Commitment:
There are no required practices, however, it is expected that swimmers at this level are committed to their training and returning to school in condition for the arduous college season.

Masters Program – swimmers 19 and over
Masters
Description:
The BR RYALL Masters group is open to all adult swimmers (fitness, triathlete, competitive, non-competitive) who are dedicated to improving their fitness through swimming. 
Focus:
The group is designed to help swimmers improve fitness and/or train for specific goals, and offer active support for a healthy lifestyle through friendship, and camaraderie.
Commitment:
There are no required practices.

The above descriptions are guidelines; ultimate group assignment will be at the discretion of the BR Ryall coaching staff.
