Ventura County
Masters
The Ventura County Masters
(VCM) swim team is a United States Masters Swimming registered club
in the Southern Pacific Masters Association and Southwestern Zone.
We are the adult swimming team of the Buenaventura Swim Club, a
United States Swimming registered club and a California 501(C)(3)
non-profit organization under the name of Buenaventura Swim
Patrons, Inc. A copy of the club bylaws or team handbook are
available upon request.
We encourage
participation in our activities by adults who are interested in
increased physical fitness through interval-based competitive
swimming practice. We welcome participation from
basic/intermediate skill levels up to and including elite-level
"world class" Masters swimmers and triathletes. Our goal is to
promote a healthy, safe, fun, and low-key team atmosphere in
conjunction with the Buenaventura Swim Club, its coaches, swimmers,
parents, and affiliates.
As the most senior group of the
club, VCM members bring experience, leadership, and maturity for
the benefit of our club’s younger swimmers. VCM members have
been active as club Board members, meet operations officials, and
have taken leading roles in the fundraising activities of the club
for the benefit of the entire organization.
VCM trains 12 months out of the
year, except when pool maintenance issues force us out of the
pool. Training is conducted in the beautiful Buenaventura Swim
Club Competition Pool at the Ventura Aquatics Center. Workouts
are normally conducted with the pool setup in a 25-yard format
(short course), but long course (50-meter) training is scheduled to
occur in the mornings during the long course season (May-August).
Our team dues are $65/month due on the first of the month and
payable to Buenaventura Swim Club. Payments received after
the 10th of the month may be subject to a late payment
fee. We also offer the option of a 10-swim “punch
card” pass for $75 that allows less-frequent or out-of-town
swimmers to enjoy our program. If interested in the punch card
option, please inquire with the coach on
deck.
The VCM team currently boasts
over 100 members with differing swimming skills, interests, and
goals. Some of our members are lap swimmers who enjoy the
social physical benefits of the workout environment. Other
team members participate in swim meets, triathlons, other events
and invitationals throughout the year. Several of our team
members are among the elite in the region, state, nation, and
world. Our national men’s team members have placed in the top
3 of the team standings (small team division) at the USMS short
course national championships numerous times. Our triathlete
members have placed high in world and national championships and
Ironman competitions.
Head Coach Jason
York: Coach Jason has been a
youth and masters swim coach since 1996, beginning his career with
swim clubs in Chico and Oroville. In 1999, he joined the coaching
team at the nationally-renowned Santa Clara Swim Club and was
mentored by Dick Jochums, a legendary coach who produced numerous
Olympians. During his eight years at Santa Clara, Jason coached
pre-competitive and age-group swimmers, assisted with senior and
national teams and founded a successful pre-masters team. He
was named Pacific Swimming Western Zone All-Star Coach in 2006 and
2007. He is certified as a Level Three coach by the American
Swimming Coaches Association.
Coach Jason’s swimming
background includes starting at the Santa Clara Swim Club at the
age of seven and training with the club until he left to attend BYU
and UCSB. At UCSB he was a scholarship swimmer and helped lead
the Gauchos to two Big West Conference titles. His personal
swimming achievements include Olympic Trials Qualifier, Senior
& Junior Nationals Qualifier, Far Westerns Champion, high
school All-American and CIF-CCS champion, and a Pacific Swimming
and National Age Group record holder.
