Stephanie
Gontarz Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was
started in January of 2002, when tragedy struck our team. Stephanie
was on her way to her first practice with the swim club when a most
unfortunate car accident took her life much too early. Stephanie
was survived by her mother - Danette, father - Richard, and brother
- Nathan.
This scholarship is open to all club members who are in their
senior year of high school with plans to attend college. A
successful candidate will have spent three years, including their
senior year, with the club. Participation in six meets each year
during that time is a must. Student athletes must show excellence
in the classroom, leadership in and around the pool and be a role
model for our youngest club members. While swimming in college is
preferable, it is not a criterion.
The scholarship amount is $750 per recipient and may only be
awarded once per year; it does not have to be awarded if no one is
selected by the committee. For more information please contact
Coach Russ. Applicants should submit a letter of consideration to
Coach Russ by March 1st of the year in which they are a senior in
high school. The application should include the following: a letter
to the Gontarz family thanking them for the scholarship the club
offers; a 500 word essay about the impact of the club in their
life; a list of academic and athletic accomplishments; and the
school to which you will matriculate.
There is a second tier to this scholarship. It was also set-up to
bring swimming to families that could not otherwise afford it. In
order to qualify, you must send a letter of consideration to the
club. It will be decided upon at the following board meeting. We
reserve the right to ask for financial doucmentation supporting
your request, as well as limiting the number of times that one can
receive this award.
