November 1999

Message from the President

We are now well into our short course season. Hopefully the weather will remain warm through the coming months and swimmers will stay with the program.

During the past months there have been several great events that coordinated by parents who are deserving of recognition and thanks. Our awards banquet was the best ever... great food and wonderful people. Thank you Roland Felix for chairing this committee and thank you to Angeli Stanwick and Janet Mata for taking care of awards. Thank you to everyone for helping and bringing food. Our Halloween party was a great success! Thank you Mark Kearney for setting up this event. Thank you also to other parents and swimmers who have helped with these events and at our recent swim meets.

The results of our quality surveys indicate overall approval of the VJO program. Our board is meeting to discuss goals and ways to improve. Distributing work among parents is an area we will be trying to address. Many hands makes light work. The best way to improve in this area is to offer your help. Also, please say yes when asked to participate in swim meets and team events. Communication is always an area for work. With many new families there are lots of questions about the organization. If you have questions of a general nature, please put them into the president's folder. We will answer them in the next newsletter. On Monday, November 29, at 6:00 we will try out a suggestion to have board members on deck to answer questions. Many board members are there every night but setting a time and date may help. Please join us so we can all learn each other's names and learn about our club. Learning names was seen as an area of interest for parents. The actual results of the surveys will be available in the communications file box.

Mark your calendars for our annual Christmas party to be held on Saturday, December 19, 5:30 to 8:30 at Glen Cove Elementary School. This will be a potluck and there will be singing. Keep posted for more details.

This year we will not be having a crab feed in January. Instead we will be planning a spaghetti feed with an auction. Thank you for encouraging and supporting your child(ren) in swimming through the winter months!

Safeway eScrip Program -- Please Sign up!!!

Along with this newsletter is an application for Safeway eScrip. This program could have an amazing benefit to the club! Here's the way it works. Sign up by filling out the form and mailing it in with the pre-addressed envelope. The registration fee is $10.00 BUT VJO WILL REIMBURSE YOU FOR THIS FEE WHEN WE GET THE PRINT OUT THAT YOU HAVE SIGNED UP. It is well worth our funds to pay your registration fees. If 50 families sign up and each spends $400 per month at Safeway, the club will make $12,000. This is amazing math. There was a neutral sentiment in our survey about doing more fund-raisers. This is a great way to raise funds with no work. PLEASE SIGN UP!!! Please encourage friends and family members to sign up and designate VJO on the form.

Swimmers -- Wear Socks, Wool Hats, Gloves, and Jackets -- Stay Warm at Practice and at Meets!!!
