NISKAYUNA ROWING
HISTORY
Originally called the Niskayuna Crew Club,
Niskayuna Rowing was organized in April, 1987 when juniors Alyson
Kuntz and Jennett Vosburgh recruited Nan Kuntz, Niskayuna teacher,
and Matt Hopkins, Union College rower, to help get the club on the
water. During the first spring, 30 eager Niskayuna students took
turns practicing in a wooden shell made in 1950 that was purchased
for $1.00 with a set of borrowed wooden oars. By the later '90's,
there were as many as 130 team members rowing daily out of a bay
added to the Aqueduct Boat House by Niskayuna parents in
1992.
Our
partnership with the Niskayuna Central School District (NCSD)
took a step forward on April 25, 2005 when the Board of
Education voted to recognize Friends of Niskayuna Crew Club as an
outside, school-related group for insurance coverage.
Since 2005 we have evolved as an organization and
a partner with NCSD. Niskayuna Rowing, Incorporated is a
501(c)3 non-profit organization doing business as Friends of
Niskayuna Rowing. The following chart serves to clarify the
roles and relationship between our organization and Niskayuna
Central School District.
