About the Innisfail Hurricanes Water Polo
Club
The Hurricanes Water Polo Club was
formed in 2008 and is a not for profit amateur sporting club based
out of the Innisfail Aquatic Center. The club offers instruction in
water polo, community and competitive opportunities, and athletic
training for males and females aged 6 to 16 years old. The
Hurricanes are members of the Alberta Water Polo Association and
governed by the bylaws of the Alberta Water Polo Association (AWPA)
and Water Polo Canada.
When does the club
meet?
The club practices Monday and
Wednesday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Innisfail Aquatic
Centre. Practices are divided into two 1-hour time periods so that
younger and less experienced players have their own training
sessions.
Our community club program begins in mid-September and runs through
until the end of March. There will be special events throughout the
year that may include social gatherings, weekend clinics /
competitions as well as a year end party and awards ceremony. These
will be announced on the team website and through email
communications.
If your athlete is interested in competitive play, the Hurricanes
will offer an affiliation with a Calgary water polo club. This will
provide opportunities to play in AWPA City League and Provincial
League games. It is important to note that additional fees would be
required to the Calgary club as well as a commitment to attend some
practices in the city.
Who is the coaching staff and board of
directors?
For the 2020/2021 season, the
coaches of the Innisfail Hurricanes are Sarah Gette, Jacob Mydland and Olivia
Bergeron. Please select 'Coaches' from the 'Club Information' tab
to see their bio's.
The club administration is done by parent volunteers who comprise
the parent executive committee and who act in conjunction with the
rules and regulations of the AWPA. You will find a list of the
executive committee members and their roles in the management of
the club on the club website (www.hurricaneswaterpolo.ca). Any
parent or legal guardian of a club member has the opportunity to be
on the parent executive committee.
What does it
cost?
Our standard registration fee for
the 6+ month season is $425. Included in this fee is a team water
polo suit and team T-shirt for each participant. If there is more
than one family member registered in the club, the first athlete
pays the full fee and each subsequent family member pays $400.
NOTE: due to the uncertainty of
COVID, we have reduced our fees for the 2020/2021 season to $360
per athlete. Additional athletes from the same family would pay
$340. This does not include a water polo suit or T-shirt.
There is also a two-week trial
period that costs $50 per athlete. If the athlete wishes to
register for the remainder of the season after the trial period,
the trial fee cost will be deducted from the registration fee.
Fundraising and Volunteer
Obligations
As with any youth sport program, we
do our best to fundraise. We have been fortunate enough to be on
the Alberta Lotteries approved list for casino fundraisers.
Generally, this cycle should see us awarded a casino about every 3
years. The casino is crucial to the operations of the club and
allow us to offer this great sport to the community at a very
reasonable cost. More details to come....
The Board will also undertake other
various fundraising initiatives throughout each water polo season.
This may include bottle collection nights, raffles, or a fundraiser
sale. All families are expected to participate in club fundraising
initiatives.
All families are required to volunteer throughout the season. The
volunteer positions require no training and allow family to learn
more about the sport of water polo. We need volunteers to fill
various time clock related positions during our club intramural
games and the tournament we will be hosting in October. Details to
be discussed at the parent meeting at the beginning of the season.
A $200 Fundraising and Volunteer
Bond cheque will be required at the beginning of the year. This
will be returned to you at the conclusion of season if all
fundraising and volunteer requirements are met.
Make a splash! Make a
difference!
