About

The Carrollton Swimming Association was formed in 1968 by an interested group of parents who wanted their children to enjoy the benefits of competitive swimming and good health. Mr. John Bowles of the Forest Park Swim Team was instrumental in assisting in the Carrollton parents who included Margaret and Doyle Garrett, Nina Johnson, Dott Cover and Sherry and Theron Jennings. In the beginning, the team was a summer only team with practices held at the old City Park Pool which is not the WPA Center. Coaching was handled by Ed Lambert and Lyndon Hucheba for the first three years, with state champion Nancy (Tykac) Chandler being the outstanding swimmer.

In 1971, Laurence Smith was hired as the head coach, and the program evolved to an eight month season. During Smith’s twelve-year reign as coach, many important changes took place in the overall program, and many outstanding swimmers were developed. Eventually, the team moved to an eleven-month season, with practices scheduled four times a week during the winter and five times a week during the summer. The West Georgia College Pool was utilized by the team for year-round practices and meets. This continued cooperation between the college and the CPRCAD has been a major influence in the success of the team.

In 1978, the lakeshore Pool was opened, which was funded jointly by the City of Carrollton and Federal Funds. The pool was designed with competitive swimming in mind, and many major events have been held there during its existence.
