Valdez Torpedoes Swim Club

Alaska Swimming Inc. Mission Statement

  • Alaska Swimming will promote and develop the sport of swimming by providing opportunities in a healthy environment. We are committed to assisting all members in the pursuit of excellence.

Valdez Torpedoes Swim Club Mission Statement

  • VTSC is committed to promoting good sportsmanship, self discipline, proper health and study habits; as well as, providing educational opportunities in swimming through organized training, competition, worthwhile physical & recreational outlets. VTSC allows swimmers the opportunity to compete individually and as a team at the local, state, and national levels under the auspices of USA swimming, Inc.

Club History

  • The Valdez Torpedoes Swim Club began in 1994 when a group of interested parents and children came together and decided to create a swim club to serve local children ages 6 to 18. Consensus was that after completing the Parks and Rec. swim program, swimmers had no further resource for swim instruction and no outlet for competitive swimming. It has expanded its services to meet the needs of younger children with the Learn to Swim Program. Currently the club competes in meets at home and across the state. VTSC is a member of the Alaska Postal League and club swimmers regularly qualify for Alaska State Championships. For the first three years volunteers did all the coaching for the club from September through May. In its fourth
year the club hired its first paid head coach to supervise swimming instruction and competition and has been able
to engage the services of a full time Head Coach ever since. In 2012 an Assistant Coach was hired to run the Learn to Swim Program and to train the younger club swimmers. VTSC is currently in its 23rd year of instruction and competition.

Club Board of Directors

  • Board members are elected to one year terms of office at the general membership meeting in May. When a vacancy exists during the middle of a term the board position will be appointed directly by the President and approved by the Board of Directors for the duration of the unexpired term. A great deal of organizational work goes into making a successful swim club and board members are responsible for much of it. Regular board meetings are held at least once a month and parents or family members of Torpedoes are always welcome to attend.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • VTSC is run completely by the parents and family members of its swimmers and always needs volunteers. We need volunteers for jobs like facilitating fundraising activities, meet officials, meet timers, and chaperones on swim trips.
