About FFYS

Welcome to the Home of the Farmington Family YMCA Stingrays Swim Team!

FFYS is a year-round competitive swim team. More than just a swim team, however, FFYS is also focused on the YMCA mission: a community- and family-based commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility.  FFYS offers high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities, from novice to international competitor, while encouraging a fun and healthy environment for the social, physical and personal growth of each athlete.

FFYS offers swimming programs throughout the year. A short course season runs from September to March, a spring tune-up session runs in April and May, a summer session runs in June and July, and stroke clinics are offered in August.  If you need a practice group evaluation, please contact us here to arrange for a convenient time!

FFYS is dually affiliated with both the YMCA and USA Swimming (Michigan Swimming LSC). The team attends local and travel meets sanctioned by both organizations.

Our Tradition

The Farmington Family YMCA Stingrays is the oldest continuously operating team affiliated with US Swimming in the State of Michigan.  The team traces its history back to the MSSA (Michigan Stingray Swim Association) founded in 1969. In 1997, the MSSA team merged with the Farmington YMCA Devil Rays and adopted the team’s current name: Farmington Family YMCA Stingrays (FFYS). FFYS is currently affiliated with both YMCA Swimming and US Swimming, and has been the primary competitive swim team in the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills for over 45 years. With consistent membership of over 120 swimmers, FFYS has enjoyed great success at both the USA and YMCA levels of competitive swimming.  Our swimmers come from Farmington/Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield, Novi, Northville, Livonia, Southfield, Plymouth, and the surrounding areas.

Our History of Excellence

FFYS has had over 60 swimmers qualify for YMCA Nationals since 2000. The team has sent 11 swimmers to USA Junior Nationals and 1 swimmer to USA Senior Nationals. The team has had over 30 swimmers go on to swim in college at Division 1, 2 and 3 levels, with many of them earning athletic scholarships. The team has also had innumerable swimmers obtain college academic scholarships.

FFYS has even sent a swimmer to the Olympics. In the 2012 London Games, former Stingray Katya Bachrouche (University of Virginia ’11) competed for Lebanon in the 800 meter freestyle. Katya, a five-time YMCA National Champion also competed for North Farmington High School and was a member of FFYS for 12 years, learning how to swim right here at the Farmington YMCA.

Our Commitment to Integrity

FFYS doesn’t just develop great athletes, but also nurtures and grows our swimmers into incredible and capable young adults.  FFYS trains competitive swimmers at all levels, while also imparting the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Our parents partner with the YMCA to provide a second-to-none athletic team experience that your swimmer will cherish long into adulthood.  Our parent group, the FFYS Boosters, has been a long-standing supporter of the YMCA branch, including consistent significant contributions to the Strong Kids Campaign.  Together, we build strong kids and a strong community.

FFYS Mission

The FFYS mission is to foster a healthy environment with an encouraging and positive atmosphere for our swimmers and their families.  This atmosphere is the direct result of the team-building efforts by our coaches, our parents and our athletes themselves.  As a YMCA affiliated team, the staff, volunteers, and participants believe in character development, focusing on the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. They are the key to the success of our program.

Our mission is to encourage each and every FFYS athlete to demonstrate:

  • CARING – Support your teammates in their goals. Support your team by participating in fundraisers and team events. Cheer your teammates on at every opportunity, in practice and at meets.
  • HONESTY – Be honest with yourself and your coaches as you progress in your training.
  • RESPECT – Value the worth of every person, including yourself, your teammates, opponents and officials. Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times.
  • RESPONSIBILITY – Be accountable for your behavior and obligations. Work toward your goals.
