Before there were Sea
Dragons, there were Flying Fish.
The YMCA of Alexandria has a rich history when it comes to
aquatics. In the late 80s' and early 90s' the Flying Fish
swim team, led by coach John Flanagan, were a nationally ranked
team with Olympic hopefuls.
In 1988, Michelle Griglione, 19, took a year off from Stanford to
train at the Alexandria YMCA for the Olympics. She competed
in the Olympic trials with hopes for as many as three spots on the
team. She was ranked second in the nation in the 200
butterfly, and ranked fourth in the world going into the trials in
the 200-meter individual medley.
In 1990 Flanagan was named YMCA Coach of the Year by coaches of the
other 280 YMCA teams in the national championships.
Our Sea Dragons of today are proud of the team's history and are
setting goals for themselves that will once again return the YMCA
of Alexandria to the national swimming stage.
We welcome new swimmers of all abilities. If
