  • 8 fun-filled weeks of swimming instruction and 6 consecutive, weekly dual-team swim meets.
  • The head coach is a past pool manager and current teacher in the community, the coaching staff is either college or high school students who have previously been lifeguards, coaches, or Bedford Shark team members.  They are all past or current TSA swimmers for 10+ years. They have experience as high school swim team members,  and/or year-round swimmers.  They have experience in coaching various local swim clinics and each has previous experience in giving swim lessons to young children through Bedford or other organizations.
  • 2021 Bedford Sharks Swim Team t-shirt
  • Swim cap (ability to upgrade to upgrade to a silicon cap for $15.00)
  • End of Season Recognition Award
  • End of Season Swim Banquet

** When you register your child(ren), you are agreeing to work at 3 swim meets. The Bedford Sharks will appreciate and welcome you to help above and beyond 3 meets, but 3 meets is the minimum requirement of each swim team family. If you are unable to fulfill this commitment, please respect this requirement and do not sign your child up for the team**

Please note the swimmers’ requirements for being eligible to be a swim team member (suggested age and ability).

At least 4-5 years of age and able to swim one length of the lap pool unassisted.

All swimmers will be evaluated by the coaching staff during the first week of practice. The coaching staff will evaluate your swimmer(s) during the first week and if they feel your child is not capable of swimming well enough to be safe during swim team practices, they will discuss it with you. A good guideline for you to go by when deciding whether they will pass the coach’s evaluation or not would be if they can make it from one end of the pool to the other unassisted. The coaches are well practiced at being able to determine if a swimmer is close enough to this goal and strong enough to be safe in the water during a regular swim team practice session.

**If you are unsure how close your child is to swimming an entire length of the pool, it would be a good idea to visit one of the indoor pools in the area to give it a try. Millbrook Exchange Park, Optimist…these are two of the closest. The safety of all swimmers is the main concern of our coaches and organizational team, followed closely by the desire for everyone to  HAVE FUN  !! Please be respectful of their considered opinions and supportive of our coaches in making sure your child(ren) are ready for a safe and fun summer participating in swim team.

Team swimsuits, will be announced soon. You are not obligated to purchase this swimsuit.

All swimmers are encouraged to wear goggles for practice and meets. They provide good protection for the eyes from chemicals in the water, and they allow a swimmer to clearly see where they are swimming.

Practices Schedule

Practice groups are based on age. We ask that your child attend 1 practice per day. Team members may attend both morning and afternoon practices if they wish.

***This information will be determined soon***

Afternoon swim practices begin (see times below) and the second week of afternoon practices we will hold 2 Swimmer Assessment Days at the regularly scheduled practice time for each age group.

The swimmers won't even realize they are being assessed.  If there are any concerns with your swimmer(s)' safety in the water, our head coach, Mike Braga will reach out to you.  If you won't be at practice on those three days, please just check in with Mike to make sure she doesn't have any concerns she planned to talk to you about.

Prior to the first meet all swimmers will participate in “Time Trials” in each stroke.

Time trials for 2021 are scheduled for Saturday, June 12th at our pool.

Our regular meet season, 2021, will begin on Tuesday, June 15th. We have six scheduled meets, three of which are considered divisional meets, and three against teams from other divisions.

All children will have the opportunity to swim in the six regular season meets. Some will be selected to swim in the main heat (which scores points for the team) and the rest swim in participatory heats. The main heat selection is left to the discretion of the coach and is generally based on the best times from the previous week’s meet.

Meet Absences
Please notify us as soon as possible when your child will  NOT  be at a meet. Line-ups for a meet are created the weekend prior to a meet. Although emergencies do arise, please try not to wait until the day of the meet to notify us of your child’s absence. This adds unnecessary confusion to an already hectic time. Relays and heat assignments are made the weekend prior to the meet and the coaches must be informed of a child’s inability to attend to make the proper assignments.

Additional Information
Our coaches are committed to making practices as much fun as possible. Although this is summer swimming, a certain amount of stroke technique instruction and endurance building workouts are required to sustain a level of competition. Much of the enjoyment of the program comes from participating on a team, the camaraderie with fellow team members, and reaching one’s own personal goals. Feel free to talk to the coaches before or after practices about your child and any concerns you may have. During a meet please allow the coaches to focus their attention on the meet.

If any issues arise during a meet, please contact the TSA representative,  not the coaches  . If you find it necessary to leave a meet early, please notify the coach immediately, as this could impact upcoming events/relays.

TSA Meet
This year the Greater Raleigh Championship Invitational, previously known as the TSA Championship Meet, will be held   before the end of the regular season. This meet is held at the Curran Aquatic Center (TAC) in Cary next to Cary Town Center Mall and will include swimmers from teams from the North Wake League. The participation of the swimmers on the MSRC Team will be determined as the season progresses. Each team participating is required to have several parent volunteers to help time or assist children to their events at the meet.

Private Lessons
Please be aware that the number of children, their various levels of ability, and general time constraints preclude any significant individual instruction during regular practice. However, our coaches will be available off-hours for private lessons at very competitive rates.

Lessons for Bedford Shark Swim Team members only are managed by the coaches directly. They schedule all lessons, collect and receive all payments, and handle all communications directly. You may speak with them on the pool deck when they are not coaching swim team and not providing private lessons.

E-mail, Bedford Sharks & Bedford HOA website and the bulletin board will be used to convey information throughout the season. Please check both for important information.
We hope that this basic information sheet will be helpful as the new season starts. If you have other questions, please feel free to email:

We’re looking forward to a great summer swim season and to some exciting meets.
