Carl joins the Saratoga YMCA Stingrays after nine seasons with the Glenville YMCA Porpoises.  Carl started at Glenville in 2009 where he spent two years (2009-2011) and then 7 more years (2013-2020).  Despite the team's relatively small size, Glenville produced numerous League and NYS YMCA qualifiers during his tenure that included 9 YMCA NYS Champions, 2 YMCA National qualifiers, and 2 Speedo Sectional qualifiers. Glenville also finished as high as 3rd for the summer 2019 Suburban League Championship meet.   

Carl began his coaching career with the Cortland YMCA Stingers, working with the 10 and under swimmers from 2003-2005.  He moved on to coach the Dryden High School Boys Varsity team from 2004-2008 and vastly improved the team within 2 years, twice winning the EFA Invitational and to their best dual meet record for the school since 1997.  Carl also coached the Girls Diving Team that took home consecutive IAC League diving titles.  He spent two years with the Western Connecticut YMCA Makos as an assistant coach from 2011-2013 working with all age groups in a sabbatical role.  Carl also has experience coaching Track & Field with a 5-year head coach run with the Boys and Girls Modified teams at Dryden and a 1 year assistant Varsity stint for Brookfield (CT) High School.

Carl played a variety of sports as a youngster but focused on track & field, soccer, and swimming. He competed in the long and triple jump events with league and team honors for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School and went on to compete in the jump events for the SUNY Cortland track and field team. Carl swam with the Masters program for the Cortland YMCA.

Carl holds an A.A. degree from Hudson Valley Community College, a B.S. degree in Physical Education & an M.S. degree in Health Education both from SUNY Cortland.  He lives in Charlton, NY with his wife, Kristen (Schadow) son, Logan and daughter, Eva.

Katie Carstens

Katie Carstens joins the Saratoga YMCA Stingrays as an assistant coach in her first season. Prior to coaching the Stingrays Katie served as an assistant coach with the Ballston Spa Swordfish club team for three years. Katie has a long swimming history which began at age 5, swimming with the Windwood Swim and Tennis Club in Cincinnati, OH. In 1993 she began swimming with the Countryside YMCA in Lebanon, OH. During her tenure, Katie qualified for YMCA Nationals (1994-2000) where she was a consistent finalist in individual and relay events. She also competed with her high school team, Lakota West from 1996-2000. She qualified for the Ohio High School State meet all four years of high school with her highest finishes of 8th in the 50 free and 5th in the 100 free. Katie swam collegiately at Ohio State University from 2000-2004 where she was a Big Ten Finalist and a Scholar-Athlete for all four years.  She was awarded the Big Ten Academic All-Conference Team for the 2003-2004 season to which Katie was also team captain for the womens team.  Katie has continued swimming on Masters teams in Alexandria, VA and now in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Katie has a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from Ohio State University and worked as an engineer from the years 2005-2014 at which point she stayed home to raise her children. Katie lives with her husband Andy and three kids in Ballston Spa.

Kate Gawrys

Prior to working with the Stingrays, Kate was the head coach for the Ballston Spa Swordfish for 14 years.  She also served as the Head Coach at the Ballston Aquatic Racing Team (BARC) that competes in the summer for over 10 years.  Kate is the Director of the Ballston Spa Village Pool where she has worked for almost 20 years, heading the lifeguards and swim lesson program.  Kate began swimming competitively when Ballston Spa built their new High School and Pool in 1999 and competed on the inaugural Ballston Spa Modified, Ballston Spa Varsity, BARC,and Swordfish swim teams. 
 
Kate attended Springfield College and continued her love of water and was a member of the Club Rowing Team. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training in 2007 and continued on to get a teaching certification in Health Education K-12.   Kate currently work full time as the Head Athletic Trainer and Wellness Coordinator at the Guilderland High School.

Sean Smith

Sean Smith joins the Saratoga YMCA Stingrays in his first year and who comes to the team with long term experience swimming competitively, as a swim instructor, and swim coach.  Sean recently was an assistant coach with the YMCA of Southern Maine and also has coaching experience with the Schenectady summer program at Central Park.  Sean swam for the Mohonasen Varisty team for 4 years from 1994-1998 where he was team captain during his senior year. Sean attended the University of New England swimming for the club team.

Sean lives here in Saratoga Springs with his wife Jennifer and daughter Macie.  He works remotely for a Boston based Artificial Intelligence company and continues to push as an athlete, running his second marathon in October 2021. Sean has been a somewhat regular lap swimmer in the early mornings of the week and is very excited to help work with the Stingrays.
