Wendy Criner- Age Group Coach
Swimming has always been a big part of Wendy’s life. She grew up swimming in Orange County. She started competing in 25s at the age of 4 in the 6 and under group, and through the years developed her swimming into becoming a nationally competitive swimmer. Wendy qualified for Senior Nationals in six different events, and traveled all over the country representing her team.
In high school swimming, Wendy was a CIF finalist in both events she swam all four years, and ranked top 5 over all divisions in many of those events. She competed in the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 200 IM. Wendy was also a critical leg of her various relays qualifying for CIF over the years. Wendy continued as a recruited collegiate swimmer at Cal Berkeley. Swimming under USA women’s swimming coach, Teri McKeever, she focused on middle and long-distance freestyle as well as the 4x200 freestyle relay.
Wendy has coached swimmers of all levels over the years, from novice to senior group and high school. Her first coaching job was a head swim coach of an age group program in Berkeley, working with swimmers of all ages and abilities. After moving back down to Orange County, she was the head girls and boys coach for her alma mater, Kennedy High School, and in later years, coached for Foothill High School. Wendy also coached the pre-senior program at Golden West Swim Club under Bud McAllister, who coached Olympic gold-medalist Janet Evans.
Wendy’s heart has always been in swimming; especially as she has watched her own daughters swimming develop. As an age group coach, she loves focusing on the developmental skills that strengthen young people into confident young swimmers that enjoy the sport. At this age, Wendy wants young swimmers to have fun, while also becoming more efficient and stronger swimmers; part of the joy swimmers have in the sport is improving their times in events. This is her goal in working with every young swimmer on BGST: help them develop the love and skills of swimming!
