Coaching Staff

Nicolas Bélisle

Head Coach, Senior Performance Lead

For the past seven years Nico has led the Senior Performance group and he looks forward to working with this group once again in the 2017-18 season; it is always a fun and exciting challenge to try to bring out the best in swimmers and help them meet their goals. He is passionate about sharing both his knowledge and love of the sport to athletes, parents, other coaches, and really anyone who will take the time to listen! A former swimmer whose resume includes being one of the original ROCS swimmers and captain of the University of Toronto varsity team, Nico is a level 2 trained coach. 

Amanda Beth Macdonald

Academy Red/Jr Performance Lead Coach

Coach Amanda is joining ROCS for her third season as the Junior Performance Coach. Amanda is an NCCP Level II trained coach with over 15 years of competitive swimming experience. Amanda has been a staff member on provincial teams and volunteered her time with Provincial Sport Organizations. She is working as a Registered Dietitian, helping athletes use food and nutrition to meet performance goals. Coach Amanda is passionate about teaching and believes that providing positive challenges in the training environment help her swimmers to grow as athletes and as people.

 

 

John Hawes

With over 45 years of teaching, coaching and administrative experience, Coach John currently coaches the ROCS Triathlon Program and 3 members of the Canadian National Modern Pentathlon Team. In addition to being an NCCP Certified, 3-time Olympian coach, John also brings solid experience as a 2-Time Olympian Swimmer and Modern Pentathlete himself. 

Claudia Cronin-Schlote

Founder of ROCS in September 2002. Claudia has spent over 45 years learning about the sport of competitive swimming. She has been a contributing author to several Swimming Canada NCCP technical swimming manuals and videos during the 1990’s. Having coached the entire spectrum of swimmers - ranging from pre-competitive through to Canadian Senior National Team members with a number of her proteges competing at the 1988 & 1992 Olympic Games. She also coached the University of Waterloo’s Men’s Team to 3 consecutive National University Championships and was voted by her peers University Coach of the Year in 1977. Her own swimming experiences included being Captain of the Acadia U. and U. of Waterloo swimming teams and Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee at both these universities. Along the way she broke Canadian National University and Canadian & World Masters records and competed at two Olympic Trials. In the last 14 years she has devoted most of her energy into growing and running ROCS along with Co-owner, John Hawes. Presently she is happy to share her swimming and coaching experiences with her current swimmers and coaches in the Competitive Development and Pre-Competitive groups.

Kelly Paradis

As an age group swimmer Kelly swam for the Cornwall Sea Lions. While attending University she swam for the New Brunswick varsity swim team. In 2002 she began her coaching career in Columbia Maryland (USA) where she coached age group swimmers  from ages 7-13 years of age. In 2006 she returned to Canada and started coaching age group swimming within the Ottawa area.  
Kelly's involvement in swimming also runs in the family, her mother also coached for 14 years, her sister has coached and her brother, Patrick, is the head coach of the Cheena Swim Club in north shore Vancouver.
Aside from coaching she is a mom of 4 amazing little girls as well as a professional civil engineer and professional project manager working in the field of land development, and ROCS is more than grateful that Kelly finds the time to be part of our team!

Kristine Deacon

Kristine returns for her 3rd season of coaching with our Competitive—Development group. Kristine has an extensive background in swimming; having swam and coached with the Cambridge Aquajets for 12 years, and as an intern in the sport community, she had the unique opportunity of working with the Grenada Olympic Committee for one year, where she also coached with two swim clubs and taught young girls how to swim using the ocean instead of a pool! Kristine is currently Manager, National Teams for Athletics Canada, and is “thrilled to be back with the Competitive Development swimmers and having the opportunity to contribute to tomorrow's next Provincial, National and Olympic swimmers”. 

Jason Sokolowski

Having 4 years of competitive swimming experience, Coach Jason is currently in his first year with ROCS. Jason was “discovered” this summer coaching a local summer team; a position he’s held for a few years and where he’s been busy helping a wide range of swimmers meet their goals. Coach Jason is currently studying in the “Earth Sciences” program at Carleton and we are delighted to have him as part of our coaching staff. Jason says he is “enjoying his time coaching Academy Red this season and is looking forward to seeing the swimmers improve while also enjoying their time at ROCS."

Mohamed Khaled Aly

This season ROCS welcomes Mo as a coaching assistant with our Academy White group. Mo grew up in Cairo Egypt where he began his swimming career. At 13, Mo set the Egyptian national record for the 50m Backstroke for his age group, and later became a member of the Egyptian Junior National Swim Team. Currently Mo is an international student at Carleton, in his third year of Mechanical Engineering, and also a member of Carleton's varsity swim team, where he ranks 3rd on Carleton's all-time top 20 list in 2 events. ROCS is pleased to have Mo as part of our coaching staff, sharing his skills and experience with our AC White swimmers.

David Thibodeau

David is joining ROCS for his first season as an assistant coach for the Academy White group! David is a NCCP level 1 trained coach and has been coaching since 2011. As an age group swimmer David swim for the Milton Marlins and the Fredericton Aquanauts Swim Team. While in university he has competed on the University of New Brunswick varsity swim team and for the Carleton University varsity swim team. David has been a competitive swimmer for a ten years and competed at Canada Games in 2013 for Team New Brunswick.

ROCS welcomes Matt back for his third season as part of the Academy White and Tri-group coaching team. Matt enjoyed a career in swimming that spanned 20 years, 10 of which he was a member of Canada’s National Team. Matt has won 19 national titles, and has broken 6 Canadian records over his career. He brings to ROCS his talent and vast experience in the sport, which also included representing Canada for 8 years in International events – and at this point, Matt remains the Canadian record holder in the 200m backstroke! He is also pleased to be coaching with ROCS, and notes that “my goal is to give back what I have learned through my years of swimming." We are sure that our swimmers appreciate this sentiment, and the opportunity to train with our father-son swimming experts!
