Brian Woods

Head Coach





Head Coach:

Brian Woods is the head coach of TIDE. He has led our swimmers since September 2000. Brian began coaching in 1988 and has coached in both Canada and England.

Brian is from Norwich, England. He received a B.Sc in Sport Science from theUniversity of Brighton in 1992, and in 1993 he came to Canada to do a Masters Degree in Sports Science at UNB.  Brian started swimming lessons at the age of five with the local swimming club; the Norwich Penguins.  Over the next 15 years, Brian progressed through the clubs various levels and represented the club at national and international swim meets. Brian began teaching and coaching swimming at all levels of the club, and was the head coach of the Brighton University swimming team.  During his time at UNB, he swam for the Beavers and Varsity Reds, and finaled at CIAU’s every year. Since graduating from UNB, he has coached for UNB, Swimming New Brunswick, at UNB summer swim camps, FAST, and most importantly Tide. Brian has achieved his level 2 coaching certification level with Swim Canada. Since he became the head coach, 19 TIDE swimmers have been selected for the NB Canada Games Team. He also has been the head coach of several NB provincial swim teams. 100% of the graduating swimmers from TIDE have gone on to University.  

Brian is the Manager of Information technology for the City of Saint John.  Brian and his wife, Nikki, have two dogs Molly (Black Lab) and Jexxewok (Bernollie).  Nikki is the head coach of Quispamsis Figure Skating Club. They both love coaching and seeing athletes achieve their best.

Gabriel Selway - Gabe joined TIDE when he moved to New Brunswick from France in 2014. In France, Gabe swam with the AMSLF Fréjus, Saint Raphaël Natation and Canet 66 swim clubs. He participated in the French Swim Championship for 8 consecutive years. Gabe attended several international meets, Golden Lane and Mare Nostrum (in France and in Spain) and since coming to Canada he has competed at provincial, regional and national levels. At 14, Gabe was a winner of the Speedo Challenge.

His specialty is freestyle, particularly the 100, 200 and 400m. Gabe coached both swimming and dryland in France. In 2014, Gabe became an assist coach with TIDE; working with swimmers from Mighty Sharks to Seniors. Gabe instructs private lessons at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre. He has worked at the CGAC teaching group lessons as well. Gabe has completed: Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI), Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Swim Canada Coach 101 Fundamentals.
