Head Coach - Men
Mike Pearce is UBC Athletics longest serving varsity head coach. Beginning his coaching career with the women's program in 1995 he quickly helped elevate eight student/athletes to international status, five of whom started under Pearce as novice rowers. In 1998, Mike switched to the men's program and has led its athletes to many successes: multiple national medals in all boat classes, a Head of the Charles Championship (4+) and the Canadian University Rowing Championships in 2005, 2014, 2016 and 2017 and multiple Brown Cup victories. Mike has produced 22 National Team athletes, six who started as novice men, two of whom became three-time World Champions and Olympic gold medalists.
A National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 4 rowing coach since 2003, Mike has been awarded the Canadian University Coach of the Year four times (2005, 2013, 2014, 2017) and is a past winner of the prestigious Royal Jubilee Award for coaching excellence and has been awarded Rowing Canada Coach of the Year. In addition to coaching Mike provided vision and leadership in the creation of the outstanding $6 million John MS Lecky UBC Boathouse project and restoring UBC to preeminence among university rowing programs in Canada.
Mike lives in Richmond with his wife Christine and two sons, Liam and Owen.
