Coaches & Directors

All of our coaches are highly skilled, former or current competitive swimmers.  Each one is trained and certified through USA Swimming.  As a group, they meet once a month to scrutinize the success of the techniques being implemented and to discuss new ideas, methods, and seasonal plans.  We are here to support your needs. If your questions are related to workouts, meets, events, goal setting, and other swimming related needs, please contact one of the coaches. For all questions related to administrative, such as dues, safety, or policy issues, please contact BAC by email

Matthew O'Malley

Junior Orcas Coach, HSD Coach

Coach Matt started swimming competitively at 10 years old.  He is still a swimmer today with over 28 years in the pool.  Matt got his start in the pool swimming with various Summer recreation teams in the Bakersfield area.  His talent and feel for the water launched a very successful high school swimming campaign at Garces Memorial that earned him multiple All-American awards.  He was a regular fixture at the CIF Valley Championships and in 2004 placed 3rd in the 100 Breast and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.  His times were historically fast at Garces.  12 years later he still holds the school records there for the 100 Breast, 200 IM, 50 Free and 200 Free Relay.  Matt brought his knowledge for success in the pool to the pool deck.  He spent 3 years coaching with the City if Bakersfield swim program and 2 years as the head coach of the Lakeside Swim Team.  Matt also was the head coach of the Independence High School Varsity Swim Team.  In just one year at Independence he qualified 15 swimmers for the Valley Championships of which 3 placed top 8 in finals.  In addition to coaching the Age Group Premier squad at BAC, Matt is also the Aquatics Coordinator for the City of Bakersfield.  In his free time he enjoys perfecting his skills as an accomplished musician and record producer.  Matt says it is hard to think of coaching as a job when he gets so much satisfaction out of working with children and being an integral part in helping them reach their goals.

Esteban Jesus Gutierrez Robles

Age Group Premier Coach

After a successful swim career at Centennial High School, Coach Esteban brought his talents to the Bakersfield College swim team where he specializes in freestyle and butterly. He was named both the 2020 Sprint Master and Butterfly Master of the Ram Crush Meet where he swam the 50/100/200 of each stroke and took the title home in both.
