Karen Anne Athen
Born in England, Karen moved to California at a young age and began swimming competitively at the age of eight with the Fairfield Seahorses. She swam mostly for the summer swim league and few years with the year-round AAU Team, Solano Aquatics Club where she had her first opportunity to coach. She is a backstroker who qualified for regional meets all four years of high school and was an All-American in 50 back in the early 80s. As well as swimming, Karen also played water polo in high school and beyond.
Karen began coaching at the age of 18 when, while coaching for the Fairfield Aquatic Club, she developed a program for developmental swimmers into competitive swimmers within one summer. Some even competed in 100 IMs their first year. She finds few things as rewarding as helping young swimmers achieve their goals.
After raising her children, Karen returned to coaching as the assistant boys and girls swim coach at Vista Ridge High School until they cancelled the program due to budget cuts. Karen has worked with swimmers of all ages and most levels, but her first love is still age groupers. She has spent the last 3.5 years serving as the head swim coach at Life Time Fitness in Colorado Springs, where she coached all levels and produced many state qualifiers. During Karen’s tenure at Life Time, the team nearly doubled in size and has continued to grow in quality and quantity.
A few years ago, at the age of 47, she finally succeeded in a longtime goal of competing in a 70.3 Ironman competition. Which goes to prove, you are never too old to achieve your dreams.
