John M. Spire
Director of Competitive Aquatics & Head Coach
John M. Spire serves as Director of Competitive Aquatics for the YMCA of South Florida and is the Head Coach of YSF Barracudas Swim Club.
Mr. Spire has been involved in aquatics either as a swimmer, parent, and/or coach for over 40 years.
As a competitive swimmer, he is one of the few individuals who was named an All American Swimmer in high school, college (NCAA) and masters swimming. Mr. Spire has held swimming records from the Florida Gold Coast (Age Group) to World FINA (Masters).
In addition to serving as Head Coach for the YMCA Barracudas (YSF), Mr. Spire is Head Coach for Cypress Bay High School, in Weston, Florida. Since joining the Cypress Bay coaching staff the swim team has participated in every State Championship series meets and were 2005 Boys State Champs and runner-up in 2007.
In YSF’s first year of having an aquatics program, Mr. Spire had two swimmers qualify for the YMCA National Championships. One of his swimmers finished 10th place in the 100 yard Butterfly. In the history of the YMCA Nationals this was the first time that a South Florida team and swimmer attended and swam in the finals. Mr. Spire has coached numerous All Americans, Junior Olympians, and Junior & Senior National Qualifiers. In addition, 2014 one of YSF’s Swimmers qualified and swam in FINA World Short Course Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Mr. Spire is a graduate of the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He is a certified swim coach with USA Swimming, and YMCA of the USA and a member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA).
Lead Swim Coach - Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center
Marc Gallet serves as the Lead Swim Coach for the YSF Barracudas Swim Club at the Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center.
Mr. Gallet has been involved in swimming almost his entire life. He started swimming as an age group swimmer and received with a swim scholarship with Broward Community College (Broward College). .
Mr. Gallet has been involved with the YMCA for over 20 years and served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Hollywood YMCA for approximately 15 years. In 2009, he was asked to take over the swim coaching duties at Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center. Between 2009 and 2014, he has coached the Greater Hollywood YMCA swim team to numerous South Florida Recreational League Championships. Many of his swimmers have broken records in the league that still stand today. In 2014, the South Florida Recreational Swim League named Marc R. Gallet - “Coach of the Year”.
In 2015, a new era was started at the Greater Hollywood YMCA with the swim program joining the YSF Barracudas and USA Swimming. With Mr. Gallet’s leadership the combined teams placed third (3rd) in the 2015 YMCA Florida State Championship Swim Meet.
Mr. Gallet, in addition to his YMCA duties, is also the head swimming coach at Chaminade-Madonna Preparatory High School.
Mr. Gallet graduated from the University of Florida in 1982 with a degree in Business Administration. He is a certified swim coach with USA Swimming, YMCA of the USA and a member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA).
Lead Senior Group Swim
Neto Miller serves as Lead Senior Group Swim
Coach for the YMCA of South Florida and the YSF Barracudas Swim
Mr. Miller has been a competitive swimmer since
the age of 10 years old in South Florida. During his swimming
career in South Florida he trained under former Olympic Coach Jack
Nelson, Coach Alex Pussieldi and Coach Kurt Peppas. In 2006, he
continued his training with Coach John Spire at the newly formed
YMCA swim team at the Weston YMCA Family Center. While training
with Coach Spire, Mr. Miller became one of the first YSF swimmers
to attain YMCA National qualifying times and in 2007, prior to
attending college, he swam in the YMCA Swimming and Diving
Nationals held at the Ft. Lauderdale Aquatics Complex. He graduated
from Cypress Bay High School in 2007 and attended Lincoln College,
in Chicago, Illinois on a swimming scholarship. During his days at
Lincoln College, he swam in two NJCAA Championship meets where he
received All American Honorable Mention.
In addition to his duties with the YSF
Barracudas, Mr. Miller is Head Coach of the Sagemont High School
swim team in Weston, Florida.
Mr. Miller is a certified swim coach with USA
Swimming and YMCA of the USA.
Leopoldo "Leo" Andara
Age Group Swim Coach
Leo Andara serves as the Lead Age Group Swimming Coach for the YSF Barracudas Swim Club at the Weston YMCA Family Center.
Mr. Andara was an accomplished International Competitive Swimmer for Venezuela. During his swimming career he was a member of the Venezuelan National Swim Team from 2002 to 2011. He is a Venezuelan National Champion and National Record Holder. As a member of the National Swim Team he competed in numerous international competitions including 2007 & 2011 Pan American Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Mr. Andara has been trained under former Olympic Coach Michael Lohberg, Scott Kimmelman and Frank Bradley. He is a graduate of Florida International University (FIU) with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University (NSU).
Mr. Andara is a certified swim coach with USA Swimming and YMCA of the USA.
Coach: Pre Competitive & Sizzler Swim
Villarroel-Andara serves as the Lead Swim Coach for the Y –
Swim and Pre Competitive swim teams at the Weston YMCA Family
Villarroel-Andara has been involved with swimming in a multitude of
ways. She is a former National Record Holder and member of the
Venezuela National Swim Team. She represented Venezuela in numerous
national and international swim meets. For six years, Angelica
helped coach swimmers from 3 to 10 years old with the Centro Italo
Venezolano swim team.
stays current on the latest techniques and drills to help kids
learn the strokes properly so they can advance to the next level
with expertise. She feels it is important to give attention to
stroke technique and address the individual needs of each swimmer,
ensuring they learn not only the basics, but the finer points of
swimming and racing.
Villarroel-Andara is a certified coach with USA Swimming and YMCA
of the USA.
Kathleen A Schmidt
Dryland & Swim
Weston YMCA Family
serves as the Lead Dryland Coach and Swim Coach at the Weston YMCA
Ms. Schmidt grew up in a YMCA environment
in New Jersey. She learned to swim at the Y and was involved in
numerous Y programs. Ms. Schmidt has held a number of positions
within YMCA. She has been a CIT (Camp Counselor in Training), a
Camp Counselor, a gymnastics instructor, a life guard, a swim
instructor and swim team coach.
Ms. Schmidt is in charge of all Dryland
training for the YSF Barracudas and has a Master’s of Science
degree in Physical Education from Florida International University
and an undergraduate degree from Barry University. She is member of
and certified by American Alliance for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation & Dance and the National Association for Sport and
Physical Education. She currently is a teacher of HOPE (fitness and
health) and Anatomy Physiology at Pembroke Pines Charter High

Ricardo Pina serves as the Head Site Coach
for the YSF Barracudas Swim Club at the Pembroke Pines YMCA
Mr. Pina has been involved in swimming for over
40 years. Most of his coaching career took place in his native
country of Ecuador. During his time in Ecuador, he served on
numerous occasions as the State and National Swim Team Coach. In
addition to serving as Coach, Mr. Pina was Chairperson for the 1980
World Championship Swim Meet held in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Mr.
Pina was the official Sports Psychologist for the Ecuadorian

Robert "Bobby" Mattin
Senior Group Swim
Bobby Mattin serves as a Senior Group Swim Coach
for the YMCA of South Florida and the YSF Barracudas Swim
For over seventeen years, Mr. Mattin has been
involved in swim coaching profession with eleven of those years as
a Head Coach. His coaching experience ranges from Collegiate NCAA
to the National level USA Swimming Club Swimming.
Mr. Mattin has coached numerous Junior Olympians,
Junior & Senior National and Olympic & World Championship
Qualifiers. In addition, in 2016 one of his swimmers qualified and
swam in the Olympic Games for the Seychelles Islands in Rio,
Mr. Mattin is a graduate of the Salem State
College with a Baccalaureate degree in Sports Fitness and Leisure
Studies. He is a certified swim coach with USA Swimming, & YMCA
of the USA, certified lifeguard through the American Red Cross and
a member of the American Swim Coaches Association
