Bill Schalz has been coaching swimming at the club and high school level since 1981.  In 1994, after coaching the Aurora YMCA Swim Team for eight years, Bill and his wife Robin founded the Academy Bullets Swim Club.  At the time, the Bullets Swim Team was the only coach owned swim team in Illinois. 

In their first year, Bill and Robin led the Bullets to an 8th place finish at the Age Group State Meet and are the only team in Illinois Swimming History to finish in the top 10 in every state meet since it’s inception.  In 1997, the Bullets made history again by becoming the first Illinois team to every win a national title when Bill guided our men’s team to a first place finish at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Orlando, FL.

Bill also coaches the Rosary HS and Marmion Academy Swim Teams.  He is only the second coach in Illinois High School Assn. history to lead a women’s and men’s team to a state championship.  Under Bill’s leadership during the last 20 years, Rosary has 16 IHSA top 10 finishes and has earned a team trophy 12 times.  Rosary ranks third all time for most trophies won in women’s swimming.

Bill has served on the Board of Directors of Illinois Swimming, Inc. including four years as President, the USA Swimming Board of Directors and the American Swimming Coaches Association Right to Participate Task Force.  He currently sits on the USA Swimming International Relations and Olympic International Organizing Committees.  He has been a speaker multiple times at the ASCA World Clinic and was a guest lecturer at the European University of Madrid.  He has also served has Head Coach of the USA Swimming National and Zone Select Camps.

Swimmers training with Bill have competed in the Olympics, World Championships, Olympic Trials, Paralympic Trials, European Championships, United States Olympic Festival and many USA Swimming International Teams around the world.  He has coached swimmers to numerous state and national records and has been named Illinois Coach of the Year seventeen times.

Todd D Capen

On August 1st, 2006, Todd Capen was named Head Coach of the team. Todd joined the Bullets staff in 2001 as the Head Age Group Coach. He started out with the Bullets as a swimmer on our National Team. Todd was a member of the 1997 team that won the Junior National Meet in Orlando, FL. In that meet, Todd was a member of three winning relays and finished top 8 in three individual events. He went on to earn a swimming scholarship from Northwestern University, where he broke the team record in the 400 IM. Todd competed at the 2000 USA Olympic Trials.

Since Todd has joined the team, The Bullets have won their first ever Age Group State Championship (and many since) and have never finished lower than 5th. Todd has coached numerous State Champions, State Record Holders, National Reportable Times, Junior National qualifiers, Senior National qualifiers, and Olympic Trial qualifiers. He has served on three Team Illinois Zone staffs. Todd has been named Illinois Age Group Coach of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, & 2011. Todd was named a "National Age Group Coach of the Year" in 2009.  He currently serevs as the Senior Vice-Chair for Illinois Swimming, having also served two terms (4 years) as the Age Group Vice-Chair.

Kelly Capen

Kelly is our Team Administrator and handles all the registrations and business operations of the swim club. Kelly began swimming competitively at the age of 11 for Foxjet Swim Club in Eden Prairie, MN. She competed at the collegiate level for four years representing University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and was a Division III All-American. After college, Kelly attended graduate school at Ball State University where she also served as the Assistant Women's Coach for their swim team. From 2002-2005, Kelly served as the Head Age Group Coach of the Naperville Riptide Swim Team. Kelly has coached Olympic Trials qualifiers, Junior National qualifiers, Illinois State Champions, and numerous swimmers with National Reportable Times.

Jeremy M Meserole

Jeremy comes to the Academy Bullets to lead our Bartlett location after coaching the last four years at New Trier Swim Club. Before that, he coached high school swimming in Wisconsin for six years, and was head coach for the South Central Swim Team in his hometown of Janesville, WI - a club which he started in 2004. During Jeremy's time in Wisconsin, he coached many school record-holders, State medalists, and Sectional finalists. The SCST went from no state qualifiers in 2004 to placing 8th at the Wisconsin State meet in 2008. While at New Trier, he was responsible for the development of the 13-14 year olds - a group that produced multiple team record-holders, State medalists and champions, and Sectional and Junior National qualifiers. Jeremy was also responsible for developing the club's dryland program and philosophy.

Scott Teeters

Scott Teeters comes to us as the Director of Operations for the Kankakee location. Scott received his Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Oakland University and his Masters in Kinesiology with adaptive physical education endorsement in 2008 from Wayne State University. Scott has been the Head Women’s Coach for Eastern Michigan University and Oakland University, receiving the NIC Women’s Coach of the year award in 2000. Scott currently is the Head Coach for both Men and Women for Olivet Nazarene University. While at ONU, Scott has produced multiple All-Americans and National Champions as well as bringing home two top 3 team finishes and a Men’s Runner-Up trophy in 2015. Scott brings to us years of experience on the pool deck while being a member of ASCA, ISCA and CSCA.

Mike Laurich

.  Mike Laurich joined the Bullets in 2009 as the Head Coach of the Lewis University satellite team. Mike was a seven-time Division III All-American at North Central College during his swimming years. He began his coaching career with Bill Schalz at the Aurora YMCA from 1987 thru 1990. From 1990-2005, Mike was the Head Coach of the Hinsdale Swim Club, transforming the team to one of the most successful swim teams in Illinois. Mike also served as the Assistant (91-99) and Head coach (99-00) of the Hinsdale Central High School boys team. In 2005, Mike accepted the position as the Head Coach of the Lyons Swim Club. While at Lyons, Mike grew the program in both numbers and success, taking Lyons from the 34th ranked club in Illinois in the Virtual Club Championship to 14th. Mike was responsible for developing a Senior level program at Lyons that produced 3 Junior and 2 National qualifiers as well as National Top 10 Age Group swimmers and top 10 team placing at State . Mike has coached numerous State, Sectional, Zone, and National level swimmers, including State Champions, Olympic Trial qualifiers, National Junior Team Members, as well as USA International Team Memebers.

Brian Brown

Brian happily joins the Academy Bullets staff after very successful experiences as the Head Coach of Champs Swim Club and the Palatine Park District Swim Team, Co-Head Coach/Head Senior Coach of Cats Aquatic Team and a Senior/Elite coach with New Trier Swim Club. He has coached all levels of athletes from novice through elite. His accomplishments include having coached 9 Olympic Trials qualifiers in addition to multiple Senior National & Junior National qualifiers & finalists, along with countless Sectional, Zone, State, and Regional participants and finalists. While with Palatine, the team earned USA Swimming Club Excellence Silver Medal Status in each of his last 2 years. While with New Trier the team won the 2012 NCSA Junior National Men's Championship, the women finished 5th and the combined team finished 3rd overall.

Brian was an All-State Water Polo player at Lyons Township HS in La Grange, Illinois, and played Division 1 Water Polo at the University of Dayton, being named Team MVP and selected to the NCAA All-Midwest First Team. He has a teaching degree in Physical Education & Driver's Education and taught for 7 years at Northlake Middle School before leaving to coach swimming full-time, his true passion. He also has previously enjoyed coaching High School Basketball, Baseball and Water Polo as well as officiating IHSA Water Polo in the Spring. Brian lives in Palatine with wife Kelly and daughters Dayton & Tacy, along with their dog Flyer.

Glenn Brown

Glenn is excited to be joining the Bullets staff. He spent 6+ years coaching in Palatine with PPD with the last three of those years as Head Coach. While at PPD, the team grew by 50% and returned to a top 10 team in Illinois. Glenn has coached numerous State, Sectional, Jr. National and National qualifiers during his time at PPD. Glenn began his coaching career in 1996 with the Naperville YMCA Swim Team and was named Head Age Group Coach his second year. While at Naperville, Glenn coached numerous YMCA State and National champions as well as National YMCA record setting swimmers.

Growing up in the south suburbs, Glenn graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor H.S. in 1986. Swimming for the 80's powerhouse Joliet Jets and qualifying for state and national competitions, he took his talents to Drury University. While at Drury, Glenn earned All-American honors in the 100 and 200 yd Breastrokes in 1988.

Glenn looks to add to the already stellar coaching staff with the Bullets. Glenn will be easily recognizable as he doesn't go far without his Gator (Univ. of Florida) hat. In his free time, Glenn enjoys golfing, any live music and spending time with his three crazy nieces in Sarasota, FL.

Coach Carrie will be joining the Bullets for the 2013-14 season and will be returning to the pool deck after some time off. Coach Carrie is married to Coach Chris Chin and has previously coached in Oak Park (Tops). She also was the head coach / owner of her own swim club in Indiana prior to moving to Illinois.

Chris is entering his second season with Academy Bullets Swim Club leading the Silver 1 Group in Aurora.  Prior to accepting his position at the Academy Bullets, Chris had a brief stint at TOPS (Oak Park, IL) in which his athletes had several Top 8 finishes at Illinois Age Group State Championships & National Age Group Swim Meet (NASA) . Originally from Indiana, Chris has over 15 years of age group coaching experience. In Indiana, Chris was the lead (Dolphin Group) coach for Carmel Swim Club (Carmel, IN). At Carmel, his athletes achieved success at  Zone & Quad Championship levels as well as individual Indiana Age Group State Champions. He also served on the Team Indiana Zone Age Group staff for 2 years. Aside from Carmel, Chris also spent time coaching at Indy Dolphins (Indianapolis, IN), Head Age Group Coach at Donner Swim Club (Columbus, IN), & assistant coach for Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School (Indianapolis, IN). Chris is a graduate of Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) with a BS Biochemistry & is employed by Parker Hannifin. He recently moved to Sugar Grove, IL where he resides there with his wife (Carrie) and 2 dogs (Max & Hershey).

Zach Heilman

Zach began coaching in 2014 with Express swim Team. He started swimming freshman year of high school while he attended Downers Grove North High School and swam all four years. Zach then began swimming year-round in his junior year when he joined Express Swim Team. He attended Monmouth College where he swam for all four years as well. Zach played water polo for two years and was a part of the national championship team for the D3 club schools his junior year. He was captain of the swim team for his junior and senior years, and still holds a record on the team. He was a member of SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) which represented all athletes at Monmouth College.  Zach was also a record holder in both the breaststroke events in his time at Monmouth.

Brittany Henning

Brittany began her Illinois swimming career in 2000 when she joined the Academy Bullets. From there she went on to qualify for Illinois State Championships all four years of high school, finaling in her senior year, while also qualifying for Junior Nationals in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Brittany continued her swimming career at Seton Hall University where she received a BS in secondary education and history, was a Big East qualifier all four years, held the school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 200 and 400 medley relay, and was a Big East Academic All-Star. From there she swam and attained her masters in psychology from University College Dublin. Brittany joined the Bullets coaching staff in 2014 where she coached the Incredibullets as well as Bronze team. She has also been a staff member of Swim With Bill/Swim Labs for 11+ years where she is an instructor and supervisor. She has also coached for the Tanglewood Tiger-sharks, Aurora Country Club, and is currently coaching for the Rosary High School JV team. Brittany is incredibly excited to begin coaching Senior team this season and hopes to continue all the great work previously done to build the program.

Coach Steve swam for the Hanover Park Sailfish through 1993. That same year, he made the transition into coaching at the Park District level. Steve coached BEST from 1998-2012 and believes in proper stroke training in order to reduce the chances for injury.

Matt returns to the Bullets after stepping away from coaching in 2013. He originally joined the Bullets coaching staff in 2009, contributing 10 years of age group coaching experience to the Academy effort. Matt is a graduate of North Central College, where he competed for the Cardinals throughout his college career. He previously competed as part of the Academy Bullets Masters team. As a young swimmer, Matt swam for our very own Mike Laurich and also for Bill Schalz. Matt is currently the lead coach of the Senior Team in Aurora. He also works with the Silver I & II teams, the Academy Masters team and, occassionally, with both the Gold and Elite teams. Matt enjoys working with the best swimmers and coaches in the state of Illinois.  Matt and his wife Katie enjoy spending time with their three children - Cullen, Lily, and JJ. 

Joe R Jeffers

Joe Jeffers joins the Bullets in the fall of 2013 after spending the past 3 years as a coach of the New Trier Swim Club. Joe grew up in Wilmette and swam for the New Trier Swim Club. He graduated from New Trier High School in 2009, and has studied at Columbia University. He walked away from NTHS with a few team and state records, and represented NTSC at World Champ Trials in 2009. He's spent time as a lifeguard, water polo player and jazz musician. When he isn't coaching, he's probably listening to music or exercising. His sister is a graduate of Grinnell College and his brother is a student at New York University. 

Misty O'Connell

Misty was a 4-year state finalist and varsity letter winner at Rosary High School. She continued her swimming career on a scholarship at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she was a Big 12 Finalist, All American, and Academic All American. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Misty is currently the program director of SwimLabs, the JV Head Coach at Rosary High School, a coach for the Bartlett High School Boys Team, and coaches every one of our groups at the Bartlett Location.

Tim O’Grady began his involvement in swimming at his local swim teams in Arlington Heights. He was a four time varsity letterman at Prospect high school as well as team captain his senior year. Tim was also involved in water polo at Prospect, where he contributed to the varsity team three years, was a team captain his junior and senior year, received the Knightship Award (awarded based on leadership, citizenship, and academics), and was recognized as an all-conference player. Tim has been coaching swim teams and water polo teams for nine years. They include the Arlington Muskies Swim Team, and the Prospect High School Water Polo Team. He started the boy's swim team at South Elgin High School in 2013 where he is currently the head coach. He also teaches math at South Elgin High School, and is the head boys water polo coach at Saint Charles East High School. Outside of work and the pool, Tim likes to cook, listen to quality music, and bike. Tim looks forward to this season with the Bullets!

Alex Boutov

Alex Boutov has 10 years of experience coaching at the USA Swimming club level. After coming from Russia, where he was competitive at the Senior National and inter-collegiate level, Alex coached TIDE swim team in Norfolk, VA and was its head coach for the last 2 of 4 years there. When his family moved to Illinois, Alex worked as head coach at Decatur Swim Club (DSC) and as assistant coach at Westmont Swim Club. His DSC men’s team won Long Course IL State Champs, and women’s team was the runner up back in 1997. Alex prepared swimmers and have taken his teams to US Open, Senior Nationals, and Junior Nationals. He also coached his swimmers to win individual events at Zones, Senior, and Age Group state championships.

Alex is actively participating in Masters Swimming himself. He won 200 Fly and medalled in 3 other events at the Russian National Masters Championships in 2008. He had also won 1650 at IL Masters State meet in 2011.

Alex has developed and is promoting an innovative method of swimming stroke analysis and improvement called Natatometry™. This method is based on objective measurements of instantaneous swimming velocity. Together with his Russian colleagues he published 4 scientific papers on this topic in Russia.  In 2015 he made a presentation "Natatometer.  The Swimming Velocity Monitor" at "Sensors 2015" international conference in Long Beach, CA.

After 16 years of working as database and system administrator in software development field, Alex is enjoying being a part of enthusiastic and energetic team of coaches and swimmers.

Jenni began swimming at age 5 and swam through her sophomore year of college at EIU. Jenni coached age group swimming for 16 years with the Riverside Brookfield Swim Club Otter's. She swam varsity for RBHS all four years and held the girls 100yard Breastroke record from 1991-2007. Jenni is excited to embark on this year's coaching with the Bullets. Jenni believes that swimming builds character and confidence, but also gives a sense of accomplishment as well as prepares athletes for life.

Coach Melanie (Coach Mel) brings over 20 years of swimming experience to the Academy Bullets.  Although a "seasoned" coach, she's not as "seasoned" as her coaching partners Coach Mike & Coach Walker!  She previously coached at Lyons Swim Club, where she worked with various groups on the team.  Coach Mel was the lead coach for the largest group on the team (over 120 swimmers). In her tenture, Coach Mel developed a state champion medley relay ranked 5th in the nation and she coached multiple IL state finalists. Coach Mel has developed numerous state champion relays, individual state champions, and a large number of zone qualifiers. She has coached several swimmers that have reached age group national status. Coach Mel has served as an assistant coach for Team Illinois at multiple Central Zone Open Water Championship meets.  In 2016, Coach Mel served on the Illinois Swimming 11-12 Arena Pro-Swim Series Elite Camp Staff and traveled with the team to train in North Carolina.  Also in 2016, Coach Mel was one of 85 coaches across the nation nominated for the Fitter & Faster Age Group Coach of the Year Award based on athlete performance.  While Coach Mel has primarily lead the Silver 2 group at RB, she has assisted with all groups at the site.  She approaches coaching with a philosophy of developing strong technique, training with intensity, and developing a love for the sport.  Coach Mel is proud to be a coach for the Academy Bullets Swim Club.  Coach Mel enjoys working with swimmers of all ages and abilities and believes that developing a strong work ethic early will later pay dividends not only in the pool, but also in life!

Coach Mel is a school-based Speech-Language Pathologist, lives in LaGrange Park, and is married to Scott Walker (Silver 1 Lead Coach).  The Walker's have one son, Spencer, who proudly swims for the Bullets.

Coach Scott Walker has been with the Academy Bullets Swim Club the fall of 2012 at our Riverside Brookfield site. Coach Walker was a standout swimmer at Kankakee Eastridge High School, where his four years of varsity swimming included the following accomplishments: conference champion, district champion, state finalist, team captain, pool record holder and two-time YMCA National All-American status. He was inducted into the Kankakee High School Hall of Fame in 2007. His swimming continued through his athletic scholarship to Western Illinois University, where he was a 4-year mid-Conference finalist & conference champion in both the 100 & 200 backstroke. He was also a conference record holder and school record holder during his tenure at WIU.

His accomplishments in the water led Coach Walker to his lifelong passion of coaching, where his early age-group coaching success at the Schaumburg Park District made him a well-known name in Illinois swimming. Coach Walker was Head Coach of the Schaumburg Barracudas, growing a team of 60 to over 200 in one short season. His team recorded six top 10 finishes at the age group state meet. He produced 22 age-group state champions in his tenure at SPD.

He then moved to LaGrange to teach at Lyons Township High School and take over the swim program and also served as a pivotal age group coach for the Lyons Swim Club from 1994-2013 helping develop the younger age group swimmers into state qualifiers with some reaching National reportable times.

Since taking over the Lyons Township varsity women’s High School team from 1994 to 2011 and the men’s from 1996 to present at Lyons Township, his teams have had enormous success. Coach Walker has been named Sectional Coach of the Year over 20 times. The Illinois High School Association named Coach Walker the Illinois State Coach of the Year in 1995, following the girl’s third place finish at the state meet and in 2016 when his men’s team won the State Championships. He has produced seven Illinois High School State champions and one Illinois state record holder, has trained over 60 All-American swimmers, and over 50 of his former athletes have received monetary awards to swim at their respective universities.

Caitlyn Began Coaching with Bullets at our Romeoville Location in Fall 2011. She swam for DOCS while growing up in Central Illinois. She was a constant qualifier for: Age Group Champs, YMCA State, YMCA Nationals. She Went on to be a student athlete at Lewis University, swam for 4 Years and Graduated with a degree in Sport Management with a minor in Coaching.She has been the 10 and Under Girls Zone Coach for Team Illinois:2015 Zones and 2016 Mega Zones.

Jeff Skeels

Jeff Skeels is excited to join the coaching staff of the Academy Bullets in Springfield. Jeff most recently coached at Springfield USA where he was the head coach for 7 years. He took over a program with 2 age group state qualifiers and turned them into a team that consistently finished in the top 12 at the Illinois Swimming state meets. Several SUSA swimmers finished as state champions during his coaching tenure and finished in the top-ten age group rankings for both Illinois Swimming and USA Swimming as well as qualifying for the NCSA and USA Swimming Junior Nationals. SUSA swimmers set also over 100 team records during Jeff’s tenure with the team.

He has coached both club and high school teams in Illinois for over 30+ years. He has been an assistant coach at Redbird Swim Club, Head Age Group Coach at the Coho Swim Club, Head Coach at the former NSAC swim team and the head men’s and women’s coach at University High School. Jeff has coached several state, zone, sectional and national qualifiers as well as state champions and state record holders. Has also coached several swimmers ranked in the USA Swimming national age group top 10 rankings. He is currently a member of the Senior Committee for Illinois Swimming and has previously been a member of the Age Group Committee. Jeff grew up in Springfield, Illinois and now lives in Sherman with his daughter Brianna, a talented artist, and his son Dylan who is a proud member of the Bullets. Jeff attended Illinois State University where he was a member of the men’s swim team. He currently works as an Information Systems Specialist with the State of Illinois.

Chris joined Academy Bullets Masters in 2006 as a coach and swimmer. He has been involved in swimming since 1980 and coaching since 1990. As an athlete, Chris was a NISCA Prep School All-American (200y Medley Relay, 1988) and Maryland Scholastic Association champion (100y Free, 1988) while representing Loyola Blakefield; a Junior National qualifier (200y and 200m fly) and finalist (400m Medley Relay) at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club; and an NCAA Division III Honorable Mention All-American (200 Medley Relay) at Williams College. As a Masters swimmer, Chris has recorded 6 individual USMS Top Ten times, and served as both swimmer and coach at the 2009 USMS Long Course Nationals, where Academy Bullets Masters finished fourth in the Local Club division.

Prior to his tenure with the Bullets, Chris coached with 6 masters and 3 age-group programs in Massachusetts, Delaware, and Illinois. Chris has also served as head coach at North Central College and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA). While at North Central, Chris coached three all-CCIW swimmers and one NCAA Division III All-American.

Chris has worked with swimmers of all ages and ability levels. He has spent much of his coaching career researching innovations in breaststroke mechanics, and maintains an interest in developing quality and recovery-oriented training for adults. He has been published in SWIM, USMS SWIMMERSwimming World, and Triathlete magazines, as well as on swimnetwork.com. He has conducted numerous clinics at the age group, college and masters levels. He is a lifetime member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA), and holds coaching certifications for both Masters and Age Group swimming.

Chris was a member of the Illinois Masters Swimming Association (ILMSA) Board of Directors from 2005-2015, and has served ILMSA as Chair, Vice Chair, and IT Director. Currently Chris serves as a member of the ILMSA Coaches Committee. In 2009, Chris was named ILMSA Coach of the Year, and received both the Kerry O'Brien Coaching Award and the Dorothy Donnelly Service Award from U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS)Chris has also volunteered time and expertise with the Allegheny Mountain LMSC, and has served as AM LMSC Vice Chair. He is a former Chair and Vice Chair of the USMS Coaches Committee, and has also served on the USMS Club Development, Discussion Forums, and Futures Task Forces, as well as the USMS Rules, Registration, and Legislation Committees. From 2013-2017, Chris served two terms as Secretary of the USMS Board of Directors, and is currently serving the USMS Board as Vice President of Local Operations.  When not on the deck or in the pool with the Bullets, Chris works as a Systems Engineer for Cars.com.
