Matthew a Munz
Age Group Lead Coach - White Team
Matthew began his swimming career at
the YMCA swimming for the Lincoln Trail Sharks out of Governors
State University at 5 years old. He grew tired of sitting in the
stands watching his 2 older siblings (Steven & Amy) have all
the fun. Matthew attempted all organized sports growing up
(baseball, football, basketball, soccer, track and field) but
swimming was always his favorite. Matthew swam for a number of
other teams (Valley View Gators & Homewood Flossmor Vikings)
before joining the St. Charles Swim Team in 1990 at 9 years old.
Matthew was never an individual age
group champion but was part of numerous state championship relays
his entire age group career. He was always benefiting from a good
team that surrounded him. Matthew was the epitome of a “late
bloomer” swimmer. As a senior swimmer he finally captured
multiple individual state championships, setting the 200 IM
state record as well as winning Swimmer of the Meet his senior
year. Matthew also qualified for Junior Nationals and Senior
Nationals (reaching finals in every event his senior year at Junior
Nationals), as well as earning a scholarship to swim at Southern
Illinois University in 1998. In 2000, Matthew qualified for the
Olympic Trials in several races, competing for both St. Charles
Swim and Southern Illinois University.
Matthew enjoyed his prep time at St.
Charles High School, earning First Team All American Honors (8x) as
well as being a member of the 1997 state championship team. He won
the mental attitude award all 4 years, was the teams' co-captain
his senior year and voted most valuable swimmer. (Shared the award
with Shane Whildin) Matthew finished his high school career the
record holder in the 200 medley Relay, 200 IM, 200 free relay and
During his collegiate career Matthew
enjoyed further success. He was a multiple conference champion,
conference record holder and school record holder (100 & 200
Back). Matthew was voted most valuable swimmer and SIU's male
athlete of the year for the entire school in 2001.
Matthew joined the coaching staff in
2011 after years of working for a private manufacturing company
after college. After some soul searching Matthew realized his true
calling was swimming and began coaching full time. He started as an
assistant with the White team helping Denise Mitchell. Since that
time, Matthew has coached multiple levels on the team (Jr Team,
Pre-Team, Blue Team, Gold Team and Senior Team). Matthew is most
proud of his swimmers when they beat his old records.
During his free time, Matthew enjoys
being with his family, golfing, fishing, bowling, watching movies,
listening to music, making his own music, gaming, working out and
working on his car.
Brian s Mitchell
Age Group and Senior Assistant Coach
Brian Mitchell joined the St. Charles Swim Team coaching staff in the spring of 2007. He began coaching in 2000 as an unpaid, volunteer coach for Conant High School girls swim team. He spent 3 years at Conant before being offered to coach their cross city rival, Schaumburg High School. Brian took over the boys program in the fall of 2003, when numbers and interest in the program began to dwindle. In his short tenure, he was able to increase participation on the team by 50%. With a growing family in near-by South Elgin, now totaling four children, and seeing his career as a coach beginning to take shape, Brian jumped at the opportunity to coach with program that is rich in tradition and known nationally.
Coach Mitchell has been fortunate to have coached swimmers in our Age Group program who have gone to have success at the Regional, State, High School, Collegiate and Junior National levels. His philosophy, teach children to love the sport, respect the sport and each other. “If you do things right, fast will find you…it may not be today, but it will find you.”
