Coaching Staff

Brandon Staley

Head Coach


  Brandon Staley comes to Kraken Swimming with over 18 years of competitive swimming experience and 10 years of coaching experience. He swam with the Trumbull County YMCA swim team for 10 years. During that time Brandon competed in many high end meets such as Divisionals, Zones and Y Nationals (first, second, and third place finisher). Upon leaving the Y, Brandon swam at Penguin Swimming for 4 years. While at Penguins Brandon competed in Gold Champs, Sr. Champs and Quads. In high school Brandon was a division I district qualifier all four years in the 500(Fr,So),100 back(Fr,So,Jr,Sr) and 100 fly(Jr,Sr). Brandon swam for Allegheny College focusing in distance free, 400IM and 200 Fly. While at Allegheny Brandon was a Top 16 conference finisher in all his races. Brandon began coaching at the age of 15 at the Warren Elks and later moving to Logan Swim Club. While at Logan, the team has grown from 15 to 75 swimmers in 5 short years as well as beginning to produce several top YSL Champ finishes. Before coming to Kraken, Brandon was the Head Coach for Poland Seminary High School where he led them to 4 broken school records and a top 8 district finisher in the 50 freestyle. In his first year at Kraken, Brandon lead the team to 43 broken Age Group Records, a victory at the Youngstown Showdown, and several top 10 finishes at Lake Erie Age Group Championships. Outside of Kraken, Brandon enjoys working at the Navy Swim Camp every summer where he gets to work with swimmers and coaches from all over the country. As well as the Texas Longhorns Swim Camp along side many Olympians such as; Ian Crocker, Matt Davis and many others. Brandon also enjoys playing his Saxophone and writting music. Brandon is a member of the Ohio High School Swim Coaches Association and American Swim Coaches Association Level 2. Brandon looks forward to the continued success of Kraken Swimming in the coming years.

Trish Wirtz

Assistant Coach


Patricia (Trish) Wirtz has been involved in competitive swimming since the age of 5 at the Hubbard
Community Pool.When she graduated from Hubbard High School in 1990, she began her coaching
career as the Assistant Coach for Hubbard Swim Club. In 1994 she assumed the head coaching
position. The club was extremely successful and very well known throughout northeastern Ohio. At
the end of the 1995 swim season she was married and chose to start a family. Due to her husbands
job, she moved to Cleveland and shortly after she resigned, the Hubbard Swim Club had dissolved.
In 2000, she returned to coaching, as a coach for the Hubbard High School Varsity Swim team. In
2006, Trish was approached about bringing back USA age group swimming to the Hubbard
community and the Hubbard Swim Club was formed once again. In the 10 years as Head
Coach/Owner, the program grew from 25 kids the first season to 75 and produced 2 state qualifiers,
multiple district qualifiers and many talented athletes that went on to have extremely successful high
school and college careers in swimming. At the end of the 2016 swim season, Trish decided it was
time to turn the program over to the pool in order for it grow in a new direction, and to give the
athletes the very best opportunities to reach their fullest potentials. 

Aaron James Wirtz

Assistant Coach


Aaron Wirtz started competitive swimming in the 3 rd grade with the Hubbard Swim Club. He

swam for the team for 10 years through middle school and high school. Aaron also swam for the

Hubbard High School Varsity Swim Team where he was a four year letter winner. Throughout his

swimming career, he swam all four competitive strokes however he was primarily a distance

freestyler. Aaron started teaching swim lessons for the Hubbard Pool in early 2013. That summer

he started coaching with the Hubbard Pool’s Summer Swim League. In 2014, Aaron became an

assistant coach for the Hubbard High School Varsity Swim Team and the Hubbard Swim Club.

Joey Spurio

Assistant Coach


Joey Spurio has been coaching at Hubbard for the last 5 years, working primarily with swimmers at the beginner level while occasionally filling in for coaches at the intermediate and advanced levels. He has also been giving private instruction for the past 6 years, working with swimmers of all ages and levels. His swimming experience is just as extensive; swimming for 12 years and finishing his swimming career at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. Joe was a 2 year state qualifier and 5-time record holder for Hubbard High School. Joey is currently the 4-12th grade choir director in the Campbell City School District.

Melissa DeMattio

Dryland Coach


Melissa is an Elite Certified Personal Trainer(CPT) through the National Personal Training Institute (NPTI) and The International Sport Sciences Association (ISSA). Other certifications include Aquatics Exercise Association(AEA) group exercise instructor, Water in Motion, Acquapole, and American Red Cross Lifeguard/Instructor. Melissa was an Ohio State Qualifier her sophomore and senior year in Shot Put/Discus in Track & Field for Wintersville High School. She played Volleyball and Basketball throughout High School earning 4 year honors. While attending Youngstown State University she was a student Athletic Trainer under the supervision of Dan Wathen and Jim Tressel. Melissa has over 15 years experience in coaching/training athletes from ages 5 to 25 in a variety sports as well as Weight training and powerlifting. Melissa Specializes in Balance, Stability, Proprioception and Neuromuscular efficiency in all athletes. She believes teaching the proper techniques of an exercise and its movements is the most important aspect when developing a young athlete. If the proper mechanics are instilled in an athlete from the beginning their potential is endless and their chance of injury is greatly declined. Other area of expertise Melissa focuses on includes Functional Fitness; (proper joint movement and Range of motion), Strength training, Hypertrophy training, Sport Specific Programing, and Weight Loss.
