2018 Coaching Staff


Carl Shallenberger- 2018 Head Coach

Carl has been coaching since 2000. He has coached with the Western Reserve Seariders and Kent Roosevelt High School before moving to FAST and Firestone in 2007-2009. Carl became the Aquatics and Team director for the YMCA of Wooster in 2010. Carl swam for the Western Reserve Seariders, swam and ran for Field High School as well as the Ashland Eagles during College. In Carl's spare time he reads a lot.


Erin Crabtree - 13-14 Coach


Erin Crabtree grew up in Wooster, OH with two younger brothers who also both swam (one being Coach Adam). Erin was a state qualifier in both Volleyball and Swimming in High School, earning All-Ohio and Academic All-Ohio, All-American Consideration and Academic All-American honors in swimming. She then went on to swim at the University of Akron,earning the Mid-American Conference Congressional Award, was on the Student Athlete Advisory Council, and lectured to fellow student athletes on Athletic Awareness on Detecting, Coping and Preventing Abuse. Erin graduated with an education degree in Social Studies and then a masters degree in School Administration. Erin also holds a Level 3 USA Swimming certification.

Erin started her coaching career in high school, continuing to coach through college, and then took teaching positions with Brunswick High School and GlenOak High School and was the Head Varsity Swim Coach for both schools. Erin remained teaching and coaching for 14 years, coaching all levels from beginning swimmers to Olympic Trial Qualifiers and helped student-athletes earn scholarships and move on to college level swimming Div. I to Div. III. Erin was voted her Conference Coach of the Year on two occasions and County Coach of the Year on three occasions throughout her career with high school swimming. Erin developed a team from seven swimmers to a program of over 45 each year. Through this growth, the school record books were rewritten, as well as qualifying the school's first boy and girl to the OHSAA State Tournament. Her athletes have earned All-American, Academic All-American, All-Ohio and Conference MVP honors. 

Erin has been with HEAT with the National, Senior and Elite groups for the past 9 years. Prior to coming to HEAT, Erin was the Head Coach of two other clubs, coaching athletes from beginning level swimmers to USA Jr. National Qualifiers. Erin has now made the transition to HEAT's Head Age Group Coach and will be working with all the groups throughout the HEAT program. Erin will also be teaching the Aquatic Gym Classes at Eastwoods with the 4th and 5th graders in Hudson City Schools. 


Rich Szczepinski - 11-12 Coach

Coach Rich is the head coach for CLE Swimming and has been coaching club and high school swimming since 2002. Most notably, Rich served as the Head Coach at Toledo St. Ursula where he was named Northwest Ohio High School District Coach of the Year in 2012.  He also served as an assistant for five seasons at Toledo St. Francis High School where he helped lead the Knights to five District Titles and multiple Top-3 finishes at the Ohio High School State Championship.  He is currently the Head Coach at Berea MidPark High School.  
In addition to his successful High School coaching experience, Coach Rich has over 15 years of club and age group coaching experience.  While working with Toledo St. Ursula and St. Francis, Rich served as an assistant coach at the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club.  Working with then Head Coach, Keith Kennedy, GTAC had swimmers qualify for every National Championship and Olympic Trials from 2000-2012 and achieved Silver Medal Club status with USA Swimming.  Since founding CLE in 2013, Coach Rich has had qualifiers to every Zone and Sectional Championship; as well as qualifiers to Futures, Juniors, and Senior Nationals. 
Coach Rich is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association, the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association, and the Ohio High School Swim Coaches Association.  He was elected to two terms as the Vice Chair of Finance for Lake Erie Swimming and was recently re-appointed as the Treasurer for the Ohio High School Swim Coaches Association.  He is also the league President for the Western Club Swim League.  
He looks forward to working with dedicated swimmers from all over Lake Erie at this year's Zone Championship and cannot wait to meet you all!
