Rick returned to Sandusky last year after more than 20 years traveling the world as a professional singer/entertainer. His age group swimming career began at 8 with Plum Brook Country Club and continued with VSC and Sandusky YMCA. At Sandusky High School, he was a three-time state qualifier, captain and MVP, and recipient of the Captain Dan Thomas Memorial Award. Recruited to Gettysburg College by legendary coach George Kennedy, Rick converted from breaststroke/IM to distance freestyle and set new school records in the 1650 and 800 free relay and earned individual All-Conference honors in his freshman year. Coach Kennedy went on to fame at Johns Hopkins U, and Rick transferred to Ohio Wesleyan U., where he set new school records in the 200 & 400 IM, 200 breast, 400 & 800 free relay and 400 medley relay, and served as men’s team captain. Rick taught swimming and began coaching as an assistant at PBCC, taking over as pool manager & head coach for the next 3 years. He later served as an assistant coach under Mike Wohl at SHS. Rick returned to the pool and began swimming US Masters competitions in 2001. He has been a volunteer coach and trained with the Nadadores of South Florida off and on, whenever his travel schedule permitted. Rick went “all-in” as a full-time professional masters athlete in 2016, training up to six hours a day, almost entirely self-coached, researching and incorporating the latest, most advanced training methods, stroke techniques, nutrition, dry-land and weight training, which culminated in a 2017 National #1 Ranking in the 200 meter breaststroke and US Masters Swimming “All-American” status. He joined the VSC coaching staff in April, 2018. You might not know that Rick starred in an independent film shot entirely underwater off the coast of Key Largo, FL entitled “Waterdancing”, and has appeared in over 30 national TV commercials. He is also a licensed attorney in the State of Florida. When he’s not working out or helping others swim faster, Rick enjoys trading the stock market, traveling, free-diving, surfing, and playing tennis.
