Coaching Staff

Brendan McElroy

Head Coach


Brendan McElroy has been the Head Coach of JCC Swimming since September of 2010.  Since then, he has coaches swimmers from the JCC to the Junior National level, and has coached several age-group swimmers to first place finishes at the Maryland Swimming championships.  Coach McElroy is a much-requested presenter for competitive swimming camps, and he will be one of the coaches leading the 2014 Maryland Swimming Select Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.  Each year, Coach McElroy serves as the volunteer camp director for the All God's Children Camp conducted by the Episcopal Church of the Holy Nativity. Prior to coming to the JCC, Mr. McElroy was was on the coaching staff of the Baltimore City Swim Club.  Mr. McElroy has coached High School swimming at Baltimore Polytechnic, Beth Tfiloh, and Archbishop Curley.  He has previously served on the Maryland Swimming Board of Directors as the Diversity and Inclusion Director.

William Anthony Kirkner

Aquatics Director/ Team Founder


In college, Bill swam for Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University) and coached summer league for the Worthington Valley Swim Club.  Most recently, Mr. Kirkner coached for the Carroll County YMCA (where he served as Aquatics Director).  In 2007, he and coach Audrey Callahan helped the existing JCC swim team join USA Swimming.  He is an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer, Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer, and certified Aquatic Examiner. 

Mr. Kirkner is a member of the Maryland Swimming Board of Directors, serving as the Chair of the Safety and Diversity/Outreach committees.  In 2011, Coach Kirkner was appointed to USA Swimming's national Diversity, Outreach and Inclusion Committee, and has served as this committee's chair since January, 2013.  Mr. Kirkner graduated from Loyola College in Maryland, and earned his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. He is an active member of the Bar of the State of Maryland, and is the Chair of the Maryland Swimming Board of Review. 

Trevor McKenny Rill

Coach (Age Group)


Trevor Rill works for the JCC of Greater Baltimore Head Lifeguard for the Shapiro Aquatics Park and the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC.He has served as a coach for the JCC''s year-round swim team and summer swim team since 2012.

Trevor Rill graduated from Stevenson University with a BA in Middle School Math and Science Education.  Before college, Trevor was a member of the Carroll County YMCA Piranhas Swim Team and the Carroll Aquatics Tiger Sharks (CATS.) 

Trevor is an American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 2 coach, and is certified as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI.)    Trevor is a volunteer on Maryland Swimming's Safety Committee, and has served as the Deputy Safety Marshal for multiple State Championship meets. 

Meghan C Risper

Coach (Senior Development)


Meghan Risper, a 2011 biology graduate from Spleman College in Atlanta, GA. Risper served as a volunteer coach at her alma mater, where she coached stroke groups and taught adult learn-to-swim. She spent summers coaching at a variety of different organizations focusing on distance swimming and stroke technique. Meghan Risper joined the JCC coaching staff during the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach over the Female-Only group. Risper began her swim career with Baltimore City Swim Club (BCSC) and has 15+ years of competitive swimming; swimming for North Baltimore Swim Club (NBAC).  Ms. Risper is a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, and teaches swim lessons for the JCC Swim School.  She also coordinates the Swim Team's summer SPEEDO Boot Camp program.

Shawnise Crawford

PH Site Director/ JCC Maccabi Swim Team


Shawnise Crawford swam competitively for over 10 years as a member of USA Swimming at the Baltimore City Swim Club. While earning her B.S. degree in Psychology at Villa Julie, Shawnise Crawford coached at the Owings Mills JCC, and formally joined the USA coaching staff during the 2013-14 season, when the team expanded to add the Weinberg Park Heights JCC as a second training site. She has coached the JCC’s Female Only team and both the JCC Junior Maccabi Swim Team and JCC Maccabi Swim Team. Ms. Crawford is a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguarding Instructor, and has taught swim lessons for many years.  Her favorite color is purple.
