Coaching Staff

Coach Zuri Thorpe

Head Coach


Zuri comes to us with over 15 years of instructional swimming experience. He attended Morgan State University on a Track & Field scholarship which helped to spur his passion for coaching. Zuri has been coaching for over 5 years and was a part of the development of the swim team at 4M Swim Club assisting as Director with recruitment and marketing and everything in between. Most recently, Zuri served as Head Coach at Woodbridge Valley Swim Club. In addition to his roles on the pool deck, he has worked for Leaders of Tomorrow serving as an instructor and consultant.

Brian Luoma

Assistant Coach - Junior 2


Brian has been involved with competitive swimming for over 20 years. He started swimming for Penn Acres swim team, a summer league team in his home town of New Castle, Delaware, at the age of 7. During his last two seasons with Penn Acres, he was the co-head coach. Brian then swam sprint freestyle for the University of Maryland.  Brian is also listed on the Maryland top 10 All-time fastest times for the 50 and 100 freestyle.  Most recently, Brian has been swimming and coaching with the Central Maryland YMCA Masters.

Alexander Sanchez

Assistant Coach - Novice and Cadet Group


Alex Sanchez has been coaching swimming since 2014. During his coaching career, he has produced District qualifiers, Maryland State Championship qualifiers, and record holders. He has been mentored by coaches from Eagles Swim Team, North Baltimore Aquatic Club, Retriever Aquatic Club, and coaches from here at the Y in Catonsville. From his mentors, he has learned to teach proper technique, fast racing skills, and a great work ethic, all while having fun at the same time.

Coach Alex started swimming himself at the age of 10. He joined The Y in Catonsville when he was 12 years old. He attended McDonogh School, where he swam on the high school team for four years. During his junior year, the team won its first MIAA title since 1936. He is looking forward to graduating from UMBC in May.

JoAnne Bulla

Assistant Coach - Mini Groups


Josie started swimming at the age of 11 for her summer swim team, she swam with them until she was 18.  She also swam for two years on club teams, and for her High School team.

Josie joined the CATY coaching staff in 2014 as the dryland coach for the higher level practice groups.  This year Josie is an assistant coach to the mini 1 and mini 2 group, as well as continuing to coach dryland.

Don Schaub

Stroke Consultant - Mini Group


Don returns for his thirty-sixth year with CATY as Volunteer Coach, with a main concentration in the Developmental Group.  He is the Master of stroke technique with all groups.
