Michael Schmidt

Head Coach


Mike Schmidt is a lifelong swimmer who started swimming competitively as a youth at a local YMCA. His accomplishments include being an 11-time NCAA Division II All-American (for Oakland University), winning the NCAA Division II National Championship in the 1,650 freestyle and he winning a pair of National Championships in the 800 free relay.  He is a distinguished U.S. Master’s swimmer with many accomplishments including breaking the FINA world record in the 400 IM and breaking the U.S. Masters record in the 800 freestyle. Mike has coached competitive swimmers for over 30 years. He has enjoyed coaching swimmers from kindergarten to college at YMCAs, clubs, high schools, and colleges. He holds a B.A. and an M.A. in American History and a J.D. from Indiana School of Law.

Marcel Da Ponte

Assistant Coach


Coach Marcel Da Ponte, the Head Coach of Coastal Maine Aquatics, is an ASCA Level 4 certified coach who has 26 years of coaching experience. He has enjoyed a diverse swimming and coaching career, both in the United States and Internationally. He is a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier (1992 and 1996) in the breaststroke events, placing 5th in the 200m breaststroke at the 1992 trials. Marcel competed at the NCAA Division I level for the Ball State Cardinals in Indiana, graduating with a degree in Business Administration. During his swimming career, he trained with Pine Crest as well as the Ft. Lauderdale Swim Team (FLST) under Canadian Olympic Coach, Nick Baker. Coach Marcel has qualified swimmers for National and International teams and at all other levels including NCSA Junior Nationals, Speedo Junior Nationals, TYR Pro Series, U.S. Open and U.S. Senior Nationals.
