Tom Avila

Head Coach


Tom has been involved in competitive swimming in the New England area for over 25 years. Growing up in a swimming family from Andover, Massachusetts, Tom swam for the Andover/North Andover YMCA Hurricanes and later at Andover High School. After graduating from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, Tom took a job as an assistant coach with Gator Swim Club in Waltham where he coached for nearly 8 years.

Tom has helped
coach swimmers to some of the highest levels in our sport which include NCSA Junior National record-breakers, National Age Group Top-16 performers, Olympic Trials qualifiers, and New England Swimming champions, high-point winners, and record-holders at both the Age Group and Senior level.  More importantly, student-athletes coached by Tom have not lost their love of the sport and have gone on to swim at prestigious universities and swimming powerhouses such as Princeton, Yale, MIT, UCLA, USC, and Georgia.

Ethan Treat

Blue 3 & Masters Coach


Ethan is a former swimmer and graduate of Newton North High School where he earned five school records and four Massachusetts State Championship titles.  He was twice named as a Boston Globe All Scholastic Swimmer as well as the paper’s prestigious Swimmer of the Year in 2002.  After North, Ethan continued his swimming career at Amherst College, competing all four years at the NCAA National Championships, where he earned seven All-American Awards along with several team and conference records.

For the past fourteen years, Ethan has held several positions at various swim teams and camps including the Streamline Swim Clinic which he owned and operated for five years.  Ethan was the head coach of Newton South High School and the Weston Red Waves.  He was also an assistant swim coach at Regis College, MIT and Team Karishim.

Alyssa DeMaster

Blue 2 Coach


Coach Alyssa began her swimming career at a very young age, joining her first recreational team at the age of 6. She swam competitively for 13 years, competing at the state level as a 12-and-under. She was a state finalist her Junior and Senior years as captain of the high school team in the 100 Butterfly and 500 Freestyle, and went on to swim at the varsity level with a Division-III university in NYC.

Alyssa began her professional career in 2007 working for the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department as a lifeguard, swim instructor, and swim coach. After moving to Boston, she worked as a swim instructor for Charles River Aquatics and BU’s Recreation Department from 2010-2011, teaching swimmers of all ages and abilities. Alyssa went on to coach for the Belmont Aquatics Team (2012-2014) as the lead 10-and-under coach, where she implemented countless innovative strategies in positive psychology, body awareness, and instructional development. She also became involved in Paralympic swimming, coaching athletes at Paralympic meets throughout the south. She attended the American Swim Coaches Association conference in Florida in 2014, and continually seeks knowledge and guidance within the sport.

Coach Alyssa left BAT to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from UMass Boston, where she graduated summa cum laude through the scholars’ program. It was also during this time that she pioneered the Boston Paralympic Sport Club swim team with Mike Prout, based out of UMass Boston’s Clark Athletic Center.

Alyssa joined MAC in February of 2017 where she hopes to spend her time coaching some incredible children to become elite athletes and outstanding citizens. She enjoys developing fitness through multiple sports, having competed in such sports as rowing, mixed martial arts, Crossfit, and roller derby. Alyssa is also a freelance illustrator and textile artist, devoting her time to her passions: swimming and art. Coach Alyssa lives in Cambridge, MA with her husband and two small rescue dogs.

Mat Benson

Blue 1 & Pre-Team Coach


Mat was a 4-year letterman at Lexington High and he has been teaching swim lessons and coaching at the Paint Rock Pool in Lexington for the past 3 years. Mat grew up in a swimming family with a coach for a parent -- his father was a coach at Chelmsford and Weston high school for a number of years. He will be continuing that family tradition by helping out with the Blue 1 and Pre-team groups. He is currently a student at Northwestern University in Chicago but he is working with MAC as he pursues an internship in the Boston area.

Tom Alger

Blue 1 Coach


Tom is from Plymouth, MA and is currently a sophomore at Brandeis University, where he is studying Politics. He has been swimming competitively since he was fourteen years old and has continued his swimming in college with the Judges. He specializes in all backstroke events, 50 free, 100 free, and 200 breaststroke. He has four high school records, led his high school to States for the first time in school history, and has the 7th fastest backstroke in Brandeis history. He has coached with Harvard Technique Swim Academy at Harvard over the summer and has been with MAC since October 2016.

John Lacey

Assistant Coach


John is a USA Swimming certified coach, U.S. Masters swimmer with the MIT Tech Masters, and competes regularly in open water races throughout New England.  He began as an age group club team swimmer in Rhode Island and Virginia, swam for a Cape Elizabeth, Maine H.S. Class A state championship team, and was a four-year member of the Bates College Water Polo team.  John’s three daughters train with the MetroWest Aquatic Club.

Sabrina Greer

Pre-Team Coach


Sabrina is from Greensboro, NC and she is currently a junior at Brandeis University, where she is studying Anthropology and Psychology. She has been swimming competitively since she was seven years old, and has continued her swimming in college with the Judges! Specializing in the 200 IM and 200 back, she always swims a little bit of everything. She has been a swim coach with her summer team at home for 6 years, and has been with MAC since November of 2016.
