The Bluefish Swim Club staff consists of professionally trained coaches, who as member coaches in the American Swimming Coaches Association, have access to the most comprehensive training and certification program for youth coaches of any sport in the United States. Certified coaches in USA Swim­ming, Inc. programs possess training and experience in the physiology and psychology of adolescent development. Our coaching staff provides the assurances that the time your children spend in swimming will be quality time.

Nicholas Rice

Head Coach, Williston Site


Nick Rice is a certified Level 5 member of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) and was named a member of the Coaching Staff for the USA Swimming National Junior Team 2014-2017. Coach Nick was named the New England Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year for the 2014-15 seasons as well as being a recipient of the 2014 and 2016 Certificate of Excellence Award from the American Swimming Coaches Association. 

Nick brings experience from over 25 years of involvement in competitive swimming. He was previously the head coach of the Greater Holyoke YMCA Vikings and the North Oakland Waves at the North Oakland Family YMCA in Auburn Hills, MI.   Prior to that, he served as an Assistant Coach for Cheyenne Mountain Aquatics in Colorado Springs, CO. As a head coach, Nick led swimmers to compete at YMCA and USA States, YMCA and USA Zones, and YMCA Nationals including a 5th Place overall Women’s Team Finish at the 2013 YMCA Long Course National Championship.  He has coached multiple overall champions at the State and Zone Levels, along with 12 YMCA National A-Finalists and 2 YMCA National Champions.  He was selected to serve as a member of the USA Zone Championship Coaching Staff in 2012 for Michigan LSC overseeing the 13-14 age group for that event. Nick swam for 4 years in college at Wayne State & Metro State Universities where he specialized in backstroke.   

Nick lives in Chicopee, MA with his wife Kim, and daughter Evelyn.

Nick believes in developing well-rounded swimmers through vast technique focused drills and ample yardage to ensure a highly developed base for success across all disciplines and distances.

Chuck Batchelor

Head Coach, Attleboro Site


  • Chuck joined the Bluefish in September 2005. 
  • 2006 Head Coach of the USA Swimming's Men's National Select Camp in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center.
  • 2008 USA Swimming National Junior Team Head Coach to Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Guam.
  • 2009 USA Swimming Women's Assistant to coach to World Championship in Rome, Italy.
  • 2010 USA Swimming Women's Assistant coach to Pan Pacific Championships Irvine, California.
  • October 2011 Pan American Games Women's Head Coach.
  • 2012 New England Swimming Senior Coach of the year!

In his coaching career Batchelor has trained 1 Olympian, 52 National Qualifiers, 41 Olympic Trial Qualifiers, and had 10 swimmers rank in the top 100 in the world. He is committed to helping all of his swimmers get into the best colleges possible, guiding them through the process of selecting an institution and, if possible, receiving academic or athletic scholarships. Over seventy percent of Chuck’s student athletes have gone on to attend Ivy League institutions.

Thomas Avila

Head Age Group Coach-Williston


Tom has been involved in competitive swimming in New England for over 25 years. Growing up in a swimming family from Andover, Massachusetts, Tom swam for the Andover/North Andover YMCA Hurricanes and later at Andover High School. After graduating from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, Tom took a job as an assistant coach with Gator Swim Club in Waltham, MA where he coached for nearly 8 years. He has spent the past 2 years as the head coach of Metrowest Aquatic Club in Weston, MA.

During his time at Gator and MAC, Tom played a role in developing many successful student-athletes. Tom helped coach swimmers to some of the highest levels in our sport which include NCSA Junior National record-breakers and top-3 finishers, National Age Group Top-16 performers , Olympic Trials qualifiers, New England Age Group High-Point Winners and current and former New England Age Group record holders.  More importantly, student-athletes coached by Tom have not lost their love of the sport and gone on to swim at prestigious universities and powerful collegiate swim programs such as Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Stanford, USC, UCLA, and Georgia.

Christie Close Batchelor

Christie Batchelor was awarded the New England Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year for 2010!

Christie joined the Bluefish in September 2005 as Age Group Head Coach, Swim School Program Director, Vice-President and Co-owner with her husband Chuck. Christie is a graduate of Kenyon College, Gambier Ohio, where she was a part of NCAA Championship teams.  Christie received her BA in Psychology, with a concentration in Women’s and Gender Studies.

Christie has been coaching and instructing swim lessons for 16 years. Under her direction the Bluefish Swim School program has grown from 0 to 500 swimmers. In her coaching career she has worked with Regional, Age Group, & Zone Champions. Christie coaches at  Wheaton College and Raynham Athletic Club facilities. She coaches the Bluefish Junior Team consisting of the following training groups: Goldfish, Mini and Junior 1 & Junior 2.

Greg Gillette

Assistant SR and AG Coach, Attleboro


Greg Gillette is the Assistant Senior and Age Group Coach. Coach Greg comes back to ABF with vast experience as a Head Age Group and Head Coach of high performance athletes in the Southern California, Pacific Northwest, Illinois and New England LSC's.

Coach Greg has coached an Olympic swimmer, several Olympic trial qualifiers, U.S. National, Junior National and Sectional swimmers, as well as a number of Age Group record breakers. He's coached on a number of Zone's All-Star staffs, and was the Head Coach of the Pacific Northwest Team that won the Western Zone Meet in 2009, when he was named the 2009 ASCA Age Group Coach of the Year in the PNS LSC.

Coach Greg has served on the Board of Directors in both the Pacific Northwest and New England, where he served in both LSC's as the Coaches Representative, and was on the Age Group Committee's.

Coach Greg enjoys the challenge of finding ways to helping each individual athlete achieve their goals, and looks forward to working with each and every Bluefish Swim Club member.

Ryan Yucka

Assistant SR and AG Coach, Attleboro


Ryan Yucka comes to the Bluefish with 10+ years of coaching experience at YMCA's in Western Mass. He has coached every level of the sport and loves to work with all age groups. Recently, Ryan spent 7 years as head senior coach for the Greater Holyoke YMCA, who finished in 3rd place at the 2011 Y nationals, as well as Head coach at Holyoke Catholic High School. During his time in Holyoke, Ryan coached mostly sectional level swimmers, a few Jr. national and Senior national qualifiers as well as the teams first female Olympic Trial qualifier. Ryan graduated from Westfield State University and is a ASCA level 4 coach.

Ron Neil Jacobs

Assistant Coach-Blue and BE Distance


Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Ron Jacobs has fifteen years of competitive swimming experience and six years of coaching experience with swim teams in Florida, Texas, and California. After graduating from The Bolles School, he swam for Rice University for four years, specializing in distance events. He was also a professional triathlete for three years, before moving on to graduate school where he earned a PhD in Sociology at UCLA. He is currently a Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Albany, and co-founder of the American Journal of Cultural Sociology. Ron lives in Amherst, MA.

Amy Parent

Volunteer-Assistant Coach


Amy Parent began swimming at the age of 5 and brings her experience as a competitive swimmer at the high school, US swimming and collegiate levels as well as years of coaching experience.    Amy grew up competing as part of New England Swimming and went on to swim at the University of Connecticut specializing in distance events, where she was a BIG EAST and ECAC top 3 finisher.  She graduated from UCONN with a business degree in Information Management Services and her MBA from Western New England University.   Amy lives in Wilbraham, MA with her husband Chris and their children; Josh, Alex, Zach and Olivia.  Amy is very excited to be part of the coaching staff and share her passion, excitement and commitment to the sport of swimming.
