Kevin Markwardt

Kevin Markwardt has been the Ithaca College Men's head swim coach for the past 27 years after six seasons as an assistant. With a career record of 335-76, he’s the program’s winningest coach.

Markwardt earned back-to-back Empire 8 and UNYSCSA Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bombers to conference and state championships in 2011 and 2012.

In 2004 he received his first UNYSCSA Coach of the Year honor after the Bombers broke seven school records and earned their third state title in four seasons. Ithaca won its first UNYSCSA title in 2000-01 and repeated as state champions the following year. In 2004 Markwardt was named conference coach of the year after leading Ithaca to its third Empire 8 title.

The Bombers’ last 10 conference titles have come during his career, and they have finished in the top five in 25 of his 27 years at the UNYSCSA Championship. During his tenure, Markwardt has coached 38 student-athletes to 100 all-American honors.

Before coming to Ithaca College Markwardt served one season as coach of the Ithaca High School girls varsity swim team and three years as coach of the Cayuga Lakers USS Club team.

He is the past president of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association and was closely involved with the Empire State Games (ESG). Markwardt was the swimming chairman for the central region of the ESG for 10 years and served as state chair four years. From 1985 to 2000 he ran a competitive swim clinic during the summer at Ithaca College which attracted swimmers from all over the northeast.

Markwardt received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cortland, where he earned all-America honors in both swimming and track & field. He resides in Ithaca with his wife, Laurie, their sons, Kyle and Jakob, and daughter Kayla.

Ursula Kurman Browning

ISWM Coach and Silver Clinic Coach

I started swimming at my local Y in Illinois when I was 8 and swam through high school and college, as did my three sisters.  I graduated from Cornell University in 1987 with a BS in Nutrition.

After college, I coached swimming in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and Cincinnati, Ohio while working as a food technologist and regulatory specialist in the food industry, as well as a brief stint as a restaurant operator in a marina on the Ohio River.  My husband Pete and I left Cincinnati to attend the Culinary Institute of America, spent time in the Hudson Valley and Santa Fe, New Mexico, then moved back to Ithaca in 1995 and opened our restaurant, Viva Taqueria & Cantina.

I live in Ithaca with my husband Pete and our four kids, three dogs, and some fish.  I enjoy cooking and eating, taking naps, skiing, live music, and of course, swimming.  I am very happy to be coaching with ISWM and am delighted to be involved in the formation of this exciting organization.

Jake Lichter

ISWM Coach and IC Clinic Gold Coach

A later bloomer to swimming, I started in 8th grade and immediately feel in love with the sport. I was a four year varsity letter winner for Weston High School and Captain my senior year. I carried my career to Ithaca College where I competed as a breaststroker and IMer. During my time at Ithaca, I was a 2 time UNYSCSA champion in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay, and captain my senior year. I graduated from Ithaca in 2013 with a Bachelors of Science in Sports Management.

I served as the assistant coach of the Ithaca College Men's Program during the 2013-2014 season. I have worked with a number of clinics and club teams around the area. Most recently I served as a part-time assistant for the LCATS Swim Club and have coached of the Ithaca College swim clinics, teaching both senior and age group level swimmers.

I have a great passion for swimming and coaching. I hope to pursue a masters in sports psychology and give back to the sport that taught and still teaches me so much. It is a pleasure to be working for SwimIthaca!
