“The Jersey Flyers Aquatic Club is a swim team that is passionate about swimming. We focus on continually improving the swimmers’ skills in and out of the pool –always putting family and education first. My personal goal is to become a better coach every year” – Ruben Sembrano, JFAC Head Coach

Ruben Sembrano founded and became Head Coach of the Jersey Flyers Aquatic Club in 2010. He oversees all swimmers on the team – putting extra focus and care to see that the team’s many senior level swimmers fine tune their technique and stroke execution. During the team's first three full seasons, Sembrano has coached each and every swimmer on the team to improve their personal best times in at least three individual events.

A competitive swimmer since the age of five, Ruben excelled in the sport in his native Philippines and was awarded full athletic scholarships through high school and including his study at the University of San Carlos. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Nursing and has been a registered nurse in New Jersey since 1994. Sembrano has served as Director of Nursing for a long term care facility in Newark, held a Nursing Supervisory position in NJ’s Juvenile justice system and has been an independent nursing consultant.

Coach Michelle Sanchez joined the Jersey Flyers Coaching Staff in September 2016. In addition to coaching the Flyers, Michelle is also the head coach of the Secaucus Seahawks Summer League Swim Team. She is one of the Flyers' dryland coaches as well. She was born in New York City to her parents Menchu and Judith Sanchez, and raised in Secaucus with her older brother, Jude.  She began swimming competitively at the age of 6 with the Secaucus Seahawks, and later that year she joined the Stevens Sharks in Hoboken before moving to Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics in Manhattan at 10 years old. She remained with AGUA until she graduated high school. She attended high school at Immaculate Heart Academy and then earned her BS in Biology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in sports medicine. In addition to swimming, Michelle was a synchronized swimmer, triathlete, and open water swimmer. In her free time, Michelle likes to stay active mentally and physically, so she likes to read, design workouts, exercise and play music. She can play 17 different instruments, enjoys cooking, collects cowboy hats, and her favorite stroke is backstroke. She's the proud mom of a fluffy Portuguese Water Dog named Moana! If you're ever at a meet need to find her, look for "the hat" or "the socks" and there she is!

Coach Kat was born and raised right here in Secaucus, NJ. She started swimming at 6 years old with the Secaucus Seahawks summer swim team, and joined the Stevens Sharks in Hoboken later that year. Fun fact: she and Coach Michelle swam together at Secaucus and Stevens! At the age of 8, Kat moved to Cougar Aquatic Team (Kat swam for CAT!) and swam with them until the age of 15, when she stopped USA Club Swimming. She continued to swim for the Secaucus High School team, where she was captain. In addition to swimming, she also ran for cross country and track and field teams.

Kat graduated from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA with a BS in Health Science. While living in Philadelphia, she worked as a kickboxing instructor and became a Philly cheesesteak enthusiast. Kat is planning to work toward a Master's in Exercise Science, but for now she is enjoying her time crafting, hiking, and chilling out with her one-eyed dog Toby!
