Robert Bartus

Head Swim Coach - Lead S3

Email

Bobby grew up in Edison, NJ and started his swimming career as a member of the Rahway YMCA and Metuchen-Edison YMCA swim teams for 14 years. He graduated from Rutgers University in 2008 with a degree in Business Economics, and worked in the Banking & Insurance industry from 2006-2014. His coaching career began in 2008 by accident: as a favor to his sister, who needed someone to help coach a spring clinic at the Woodbridge YMCA, he began working with the 13 and overs to help develop their competitive swimming skills. This resulted in a growing passion and love for coaching, so after spending two years there he joined the coaching staff at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA in 2010 as a Head Age Group Coach for the 13-14's and as an Assistant National Team Coach.

In 2014 Bobby expanded his role, taking on responsibilities as the Head Age Group Coach for the 11-12s and as a full-time assistant coach. He is an ASCA Level 2 certified coach who while at FSPY led many swimmers to success, including YMCA National Top 16 Finishers, NJ YMCA State Champions, and NJ State Record Holders. In 2015, under his guidance, the FSPY 13/14 age group placed 2nd overall at NJ YMCA State Championships, including a 1st place overall finish for the 13/14 Girls. They followed that up with a 4th place overall finish in 2016, including a 1st place finish for the 13/14 boys. On the YMCA national level, during his time as a FSPY coach the team grew exponentially, all the way up to 26 qualifiers in 2016. In his final summer with the team, at YMCA Long Course Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA team finished 5th overall, including a 4th place finish for the women, and a national championship in the Women's 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Medley Relay.

Looking to take the next step in his coaching career, Bobby joined the Hunterdon County YMCA Swim Team in the Fall of 2016 as the Head Coach and Competitive Aquatic Director. During his time there, the HCY Swim Team grew to over 100 swimmers, and more than quadrupled their points scored at NJ YMCA State Championships from 2017 to 2018, including many top 16 individual and relay performances.  As he now joins the Freehold-Old Bridge YMCA Swim Team, Bobby is excited to share his experience, enthusiasm and vision with a new group of swimmers, coaches and families.

Away from the pool, Bobby recently married his long-time girlfriend, Ali Heitner, whom he met while coaching at the Woodbridge YMCA. They currently live in Matawan, NJ with their dog, a miniature dachshund named Clyde. Bobby's a huge fan of the New York Yankees, New Jersey Devils and Rutgers Football, and enjoys attending games with friends and family as often as possible. Cars and racing are also a hobby of his, as he grew up attending motorsports events and competitions with his dad every year. Bobby's favorite part of coaching is the relationships he forms with his swimmers, and joy it brings to see them reach their goals and have success. He's also a big believer in keeping things fresh, and welcomes new ideas and challenges to foster an environment of continual growth and improvement.

I grew up swimming with FOBY for 12 years (although, back when I started, we were still the water moccasins!) I had an incredible time in those 12 years, where I gained not just friends, but a family here at the Freehold, and later the Old Bridge, YMCA. In my final two years I was lucky enough to travel and compete with the national team. After I graduated high school, I attended Florida Atlantic University for college. I may have hung up my speedo and retired from the sport in college, but I was reconnected in my last two years in Florida through teaching swim lessons. I graduated from FAU with my bachelors degree in political science, and I have recently signed a contract with the United States Navy. I have quite a bit of time before I ship out, and I am happy to be back with FOBY until that time comes!

Kim Zimmer

Assistant Age Group Coach

Kim started swimming competitively for the Woodbridge Tigersharks from the age of 9 and throughout high school; and served as captain her last 3 years. Her first job was teaching swim lessons at the same YMCA, where she stayed for the next 7 years. She credits being a swim instructor as one of the things that helped her realize that she wanted to become a teacher. Kim made her high school swim team as a freshman, where her coach encouraged her and trained her as a distance swimmer. She was named captain her senior year, specializing in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle. Her senior year she placed in the top 20 for the 500 yard freestyle in the Greater Middlesex Conference. Kim went on to swim for Marywood University’s swim team as a distance swimmer tackling the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, and the 1650 freestyle (aka the mile). After following her passion for teaching children and swimming for 4 years Kim graduated from Marywood University in 2017 with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Finishing her 5-year program, Kim graduated with a Master’s degree in Reading Education in 2018.

After being a swimmer for so many years Kim is excited to finally be a coach and help swimmers reach their fullest potential. Outside of the pool, Kim can be found cheering for the New Jersey Devils, watching one of the million TV shows that she keeps up with, and hanging out with friends.

Swimming has been a part of my life from the beginning.  I started swimming competitively at age 10 at the Easton PA YMCA.  In high school I swam for the Garden State Swim Club in Berkley Heights.  My life took some turns that took me away from the sport for many years, but in 1989 I ended up in Red Bank at the Community YMCA and spent 20 years there as a swim instructor and coach, and I also started competing again in their Masters program.  When OBY opened I was offered the opportunity to work as the Assistant Aquatics Director.  One of the things I asked for was that I be able to continue coaching 8 & under swimmers.  It’s been my passion to work with and help develop young swimmers, and I’m grateful to the FOBY team and coaching staff that they’ve enabled me to continue doing what I love most!
