Tom C Cyprus

Head Coach


A five-time Age Group Coach of the Year, Thomas (Tom) Cyprus brings over 22 years of club coaching experience and competitive excellence to Charger Aquatics.  He joined Charger Aquatics in September of 2007 from City of Plano Swimmers, Inc. (COPS), where he spent one year as an assistant coach and 10 years as Head Age Group Coach. Tom is a Level-5 ASCA certified coach who has produced seven National Champions and over 200 Top-16/Top 10 time qualifiers. Tom joined COPS in 1996 and was promoted to Head Age Group Coach in 1997, where he made a significant contribution to the club's long-standing tradition of competitive excellence.  Prior to working with COPS, Tom coached in Ft. Worth, El Paso and Austin.  

Since joining Charger Aquatics, the team has grown steadily over the past 11 years and has become the first New Mexico team to ever be ranked in the top 100 in the Virtual Club Championship rankings through USA Swimming, finishing at #76 during the 2014 Long Course season.  Charger Aquatics has sent swimmers to participate in the Zone Select Camps, USA Swimming Diversity Camps and the National Select Camp.  

Tom began his swimming career at the age of 5 in El Paso, TX and has now been involved with the sport for more than 45 years.  His first coaching job was at the age of 16 during the summer of 1982.  He is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, enjoys all outdoor sports, but especially swimming and golf. Tom also taught high school math for seven years prior to making club swimming his full-time occupation.

He is married to Tawni Cyprus and has two wonderful daughters, Laurel and Chandler.

John D Butcher

Senior Coach



John’s coaching career began in Alaska with Midnight Sun Swim Team from 2006 to 2009, beginning with the age group program, and culmininating as the Interim Head Coach working with the Senior program. He also worked as the Head Coach for Lathrop High School, Hutchinson High School, and Monroe Catholic High School. During his time in Alaska, John coached qualifiers for Junior Nationals, Sectionals, and Alaska State Championships. John coached with Lobo Aquatics in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 2009 to 2011, working with the Age Group Program as well as the Senior Group. He was also a volunteer assistant coach for the University of New Mexico Women’s Swim Team.

Since joining Charger Aquatics in 2012, John has coached State Record Holders, National Top 10 ranked swimmers, and qualifiers for Junior Nationals, Sectionals, and NM State Championships. John has coached swimmers that have been selected to attend the Western Zone Select Camp and National Diversity Select Camp. 

John graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a BA in History in 2009, and a Masters in Sport Administration from the University of New Mexico in 2011. John is an American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Level-3 Coach.


Aimee Dunavant

Head Age Group Coach


Coach Aimee is a Level II American Swim Association Swim Coach (ASCA), with over 12 years of experience Aimee has coached every level ranging from age group swimmers to NCAA “B” Qualifiers.

Growing up in El Paso, TX, Aimee was a Texas Age Group Swimming (TAGS) qualifier and finalist with the El Paso Aqua Posse. She continued onto swim for University of New Mexico (UNM) from 2001-2005 where she was All-Mountain West in both the 100yd. and 200yd. Butterfly. She received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from UNM in 2006.

Aimee taught Physical Education at Zuni Elementary before leaving Albuquerque in 2008 to take the Assistant Swim Coach position at the University of Evansville (Indiana). From Evansville, Aimee coached at the University of Northern Colorado where, in 2012, she received her Master in Sports Administration. Shortly after, she returned to Albuquerque, NM to coach at her alma mater as Assistant Coach for the University of New Mexico.

Aimee has built her swimming knowledge through summers working as a swim camp counselor at numerous universities including the University of North Carolina, Texas A&M University and the Air Force Academy. While in Coloradoas the Assistant Coach for University of Northern Colorado, she was an Age Group coach for the Eaton Red Waves.

When not coaching Aimee finds herself in the pool at Master practices, backpacking and camping through our National Parks and mountain biking throughout the southwest.

Cristiva Nicole deVesty

Age Group Coach


Coach Tiva has been with Charger Aquatics since 2007. She currently coaches the Bronze and Silver groups with Charger Aquatics and is an American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 2 certified coach.  Coach Tiva has been in the world of competitive swimming for 15 years as a former member of the Duke City Aquatics, Kirtland Aquatic Club, Manzano High School swim team, and various summer league teams. Though no longer coaching in the high school league, she has experience coaching high school swimmers and is the founder of Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School swim team. Coach Tiva has taught private and group swim lessons to various levels of ages and abilities for many years. During her swimming and coaching careers, she has gained a great understanding, valuable knowledge, and love for the sport. She has excellent strategies and techniques for coaching 10&Under novice swimmers. Coach Tiva loves working with young athletes and helping them to develop an appreciation and passion for swimming!

Coach Tiva has a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Elementary Education from New Mexico Highlands University, is a level-two licensed teacher and she teaches 2nd grade at John Baker Elementary School.  She is an Albuquerque Academy Summer Session employee and teaches math and is a Co-Aquatics Director. Aside from her time spent at the pool and teaching, Coach Tiva enjoys camping, fly fishing, hiking and spending time outdoors with her husband and two dogs. 

Cristina Kawamoto

Age Group Coach/Noon Masters


Cristina Kawamoto has been a familiar face at Albuquerque Academy for many years.  Formerly the coach for Charger Aquatics Silver and Gold groups, she now coaches our noon Masters group. Cristina also teaches swim lessons and water aerobics at New Mexico Sports and Wellness.  A Level-2 Certified ASCA coach, Level-2 Certified ASCA Masters coach, ASCA certified Summer League coach, USA Swimming Stroke and Turn Official, Level-1 Certified US Synchronized Swimming coach and USMS Certified Adult Learn to Swim Instructor, Cristina graduated from the University of the Philippines with a bachelor's degree in statistics.

Annette Thies

Substitute Coach


Annette has coached at Albuquerque Academy since 2004 and recently retired as Assistant high school swim coach.  She coached the Charger Aquatics Senior 3 group from 2008-2013 and ran the Academy summer session swim camp for 5 plus years.   Annette was head coach for the Tanoan Country Club Sundance League swim team and Assistant coach with the Highpoint summer league team.  Currently she serves as a Charger Aquatics substitute coach for Age Group, Senior and masters groups.   

Annette is a Level 2 Certified ASCA coach, Level 2 Certified USMS coach, USMS Certified Adult Learn to Swim coach, and ASCA Certified Summer League coach.  She is a longtime member of NISCA for high school coaches where she is currently Membership Chair

Annette earned her B.S. in Business Administration from Central Washington University and her M.A. in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technology from the University of New Mexico. 

Bev A Leasure

Senior Coach - Los Alamos


Bev started her swimming career as an age group swimmer in Miami, Florida.  She was an assistant coach for LAHS  for two years and head coach for two years during which time she had two state champions and the teams placed in top 5 with the girls placing top three in both years.  She has coached masters swimming for the past 13 years with swimmers placing top 4 at Masters Nationals.  Bev started coaching age group swimmers in Los Alamos in 2008, with swimmers achieving the sectional and junior national level.   Bev has attained the ASCA Level III certification.  She has a BS degree in Accounting from Louisiana State University.

Wendy Michelle Lott

Age Group Coach - Los Alamos



Wendy Lott began coaching for Chargers during the fall of 2011.  Wendy began her own swimming career at the age of 9, where she trained with Tiger Aquatics in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  During these years, she qualified and swam for both the Louisiana Zone and Jr. Nationals teams.  She swam for LSU for a year before a recurrent knee injury made her ineligible to swim.  She transferred up to Northeastern University in Boston and swam one more season before her knee finally took her out of collegiate swimming for good.  Despite the injuries, Wendy continues to swim Master’s, and enjoys cheering her own daughter on in the water.  Wendy has a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archeology and a master’s degree in History with an emphasis in Cultural Resource Management / Historic Preservation.

Wendy's goal for each swimmer is to develop a positive, healthy fitness foundation that can last a lifetime. It is her hope to help develop each swimmer physically, mentally and socially so that they can learn to reach their highest potential. Wendy believes that through swimming, skills can be developed that last a lifetime.
