The GCSTO Coaching Structure

(Like You May Not See Anywhere Else)

GCSTO's staff is led by GM and Head Coach, Steve Nye, who actively oversees all aspects of day to day programming within the team at all levels. Coach Nye maintains a very aggressive role in the development of, and administration of, the practices that GCSTO offers to all swimmers on the team and to a degree rarely seen in this sport.

For each level on the team Coach Nye, in conjunction with years of input from the GCSTO coaching staff, has developed a series of practice performance expectations designated for each particular group. Athletes are expected to accomplish certain physical skills and techniques as a member of that particular level before moving onto the next level. These are designated as our “Level Expectations”. Next, each level has a series of technical developmental guidelines, termed our “Skills & Drills” that we use in similar fashion across the team to help promote the technical development of our athletes. Next, each level has a series of actual practice performance test sets that help us determine the actual performance capabilities of the athletes within our practice groups. These are part of our “Challenge Set” and “Goal Set” series. In addition, Coach Nye maintains an extensive e-library that is available to each and every coach on this team to help educate them on team operations. Nutrition, hydration, pre-race strategy, warm-down procedures, relay pick procedures, race strategy, practice structure, practice volumes and more has all been discussed on the team and summarized in writing for use by the staff. This staff has available to it hundreds of pages of information associated with how this team approaches all aspects of swimming. As well, Coach Nye also is continually developing the team’s video library. He records athletes performing various dryland and water skills making comment on proper technical execution. This is then uploaded to the coaching staff’s private library for use by the staff. When a practice is written, those skills and exercises that are being done that night that have been recorded can be written into practice as direct links to these videos so that the coaches have smart device access to the associated video. They can then review the video or allow an athlete to see that video so that there is enhanced understanding of the proper technique involved in the execution of that skill.

The coaching staff structure is streamlined so that there is a Head Senior Coach, a Head Strength & Dryland Coach and a Head Age Group Coordinator... each of which has been given specific & detailed direction by Coach Nye in terms of their responsibilities and overall goals within the program. Coach Nye meets with each of these 3 coaches on a weekly/bi-weekly basis in order to discuss the direction of the program to ensure that all coaches are truly on the same page. The Head Senior Coach is responsible for the practice structure of GCSTO's Level 4 & 5 senior training groups, the Head Age Group Coordinator is responsible for the practice structure of GCSTO's Level 1, 2 & 3 junior training groups and the Head Strength & Dryland Coach is responsible for the development of our dryland program for all athletes on the team. Each of these 3 coaches develop their practices, in advance, then sends it to the others, coach Nye included, so that suggestions can be made, restructuring can be done, an understanding of what’s to come is seen and so on. Their practice is then adjusted based on input, coach Nye’s included, and then sent on to the most vital link that we have, our Head Level Coaches, who then implement these practices making any needed adjustments to fit their practice group that night. The Head Level coaches then report back to the Head Age Group and Head Strength & Dryland Coaches to give them feedback on how things actually worked and suggestions they might have from there.

To enhance internal communication and understanding amongst the coaches so that we are acting as one strong unit, GCSTO’s schedule is set up so that twice a week the Head Level Coaches of the same level of swimmers from both of our pool locations are actually training their groups together. As well, our Head Age Group Coach does not have their own group but rather works with a variety of groups at both pools AND works 3-4 times a week with the seniors as one of the senior staff. This allows this coach to be in constant communication with not only the Head Level Coaches at both pools but the Head Senior Coach and the Head Strength & Dryland coach on a daily basis, as well. Additionally, Coach Nye also assists in practices one day a week at each pool and then alternates pools each week one other night a week. This allows him to see how everything is actually being implemented within the program, as well.

All of this allows the team to be operating, as one, moving in the same direction and not dependent on any singular coach. We truly operate as a staff. It's an incredible cycle of detailed structure, communication and implementation that you may well not find in this sport in very many other places and truly helps make us "ONE TEAM"!

Steve is the GM and Head Coach of GCSTO. He is in his 38th year with GCSTO starting with GCSTO in September of 1979 and actually took over the helm of GCSTO in the summer of 1980 as the sole coach of 27 swimmers here on the team. He swam for and was graduated from Whetstone High School here in Columbus. He competed in, both, swimming and diving, in college where he remains still as one of the few ever dual individual event conference champions and national qualifiers in, both, a swimming and diving event at the collegiate level. He holds a Masters in this field and went so far as to complete all course work, his oral exams and his general exams for his doctorate in the same field. Before finishing his dissertation, Coach Nye decided to devote himself full time to his coaching career and, as such, simply moved on into the field of coaching. He has coached over 40 US Senior National Qualifiers, 54 Junior National Qualifiers, 20 US Olympic Trial Qualifiers, 20 World ranked swimmers and 2 Olympians. He has served on several US National Team staffs during his tenure having the honor of working with some of America's (and the world's) best athletes while serving as a coach member of those national team staffs. He has also been selected as Ohio Swimming's Senior Coach of the Year no less than 8 times... more than any other coach in Ohio swimming history. He is currently owner/operator of Aquatic Consultants Enterprises, Inc., which is the parent company of GCSTO. He is married to Juli. They have 3 daughters, Lauren (21) and Victoria (18) and Alexandra (15).

Josh is GCSTO's Head Strength & Dryland Coach and our Head Level 4 Coach. As our Strength & Dryland Coach he is in charge of the dryland program structure for all athletes on the team as well as our weight training program structure for our senior athletes. Josh writes our dryland practices for all levels, in consultation with coach Nye, which then is disseminated to the coaching staff each day. He has placed a volume of dryland videos on our website so that our coaches all have the same instructional information when it comes to teaching our athletes our dryland routine.

As our Head Level 4 Coach, which became effective the fall of 2017, he is in charge of our athletes making their first move to the senior level of swimming here on the team. He has assisted at the senior level for several years in preparation for taking over this role as the head Level 4 coach and will provide incredible focus and direction for these up and coming senior athletes.

He started with GCSTO in 2013 as an assistant with our senior staff bringing tremendous past coaching experience to our staff. Josh acted as the head coach of the Jerry Garver Y in Pickerington for over 5 years and as assistant coach of Pickerington Central High School for over 5 years, as well. He is also a past member of the US Air Force Security Forces.

Evan Straw

Evan is GCSTO's Head Age Group Coordinator starting in that position in the fall of 2016 after joining our program in the spring of 2016 working with athletes in, both, our junior and senior levels. He is a GCSTO alum who had participated in a specialized High School Sprint Program offered by GCSTO at the time. He is a graduate of Westerville North High School and the Ohio State University and was also an assistant coach of the Westerville South Swim Team where he served in that position for from 2012-2017. He also coaches with the Highland Otters along with Heather Ivery, another GCSTO alum and has been there since 2008. Evan joined several other "new to GCSTO's staff" coaches in the fall of 2016 who Coach Nye feels was the best group of incoming coaches he's seen join the staff in all of his time as head coach.

As our Head Age Group Coordinator, coach Straw, upon consultation with coach Nye, writes specific daily practices for our Level 1, 2 & 3 training groups for half of the groups practices each week. He then develops an outline for the Head Level coaches to follow when they write the other 2 practices each week so that we can all ensure that all technical points are being covered by all coaches on staff. He then coaches throughout the week with these practice groups at both locations so that we have consistent feedback and communication from the staff to then structure our upcoming practices.

Cheryl, "Miss Cheryl" to her many Novice swimmers, first became associated with GCSTO in 1998 when her son joined our swimming team. Cheryl quickly became involved in the team as a volunteer. She worked in all aspects of volunteer coordination & meet operations with the team. By 2002 Cheryl was hired to work as a lesson instructor within our GCSS program where she quickly became the most requested instructor on staff. Soon thereafter she was offered the position of Head Novice Coach where she continues as the leader today while still teaching swimming lessons for us. As our Novice coach she is firm, yet understanding and holds her expectations high for our Novice swimmers. She's an absolutely amazing role model for our young swimmers and is one of the most incredible coaches that these swimmers could have as they are introduced to the sport of swimming.

Brooke was our Head Level 2 coach at Academy in the 16.17 season but recently took on a new job in real estate that prevents her from coaching full time. However, she will remain on staff as an incredibly powerful assistant coach with the team. Brooke came to us from Iowa where she coached for the Pleasant Valley Stingrays, the Piranha Swim Club and the Iowa Flyers Swim Club during her career. She graduated in December of 2015 from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in History and Iowa state licensure in Secondary Social Studies Education. She's a very knowledgeable coach with excellent experience and an incredible way of reaching the athletes. We're extremely happy to have her on staff here on the team.
