The coaching staff will focus on improving stroke technique and times. We plan to help the swimmers improve and have a blast doing it. All of the coaches really enjoy coaching and love swimming. We hope to share our love for a sport in which everyone can be successful and meet personal goals. No matter how big or small the goal, the coaching staff is dedicated to helping you succeed.

It is also important that we develop a strong sense of “team” with swimmers of all ages and parents. There will be many fun team building activities in and out of the pool. The swimmers will form lasting friendships and learn a lot about teamwork.

Coaching Staff

Thomas James Gillespie

Head Coach

Tommy is very excited to be coaching Inverness this summer. Tommy grew up with MCSL, swimming with the Rock Creek Fins for 15 years and returned to coach there after gradating. He swam with Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club and with St. John's College High School. Currently, he is studying English and Film and Media Studies at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. He is also a distance freestyler on the Jumbos Swimming and Diving team.

Brian P Kilner

Assistant Head Coach

Brian can be reached by email at briankilner@me.com.

Brian Kilner is currently a senior at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. Brian rows for Gonzaga and has earned two varsity letters and won a National Championship.  Brian rowed in the UK last summer with Gonzaga at the Henley Royal Regatta, preventing Brian from being able to coach, so he is very excited to be back for the whole of this summer coaching for the Nessies.  Brian has swum in MCSL for 13 years, all with the Nessies, and he is overjoyed to coach in his final, 14th season with the Nessies.

Brian swam for RMSC from 6th grade through 8th grade and was a full-time junior coach during the summer of 2013.  Brian has experience teaching private lessons and coaching in the group lessons program. Brian looks forward to working with swimmers of all ages and swimming experience, to cheering raucously at the pep rallies and swim meets, and most importantly, to having a fun, competitive swim season in which every swimmer can improve and enjoy every second of it.

Maya Tondravi

Assistant Coach

Maya Tondravi is currently a freshman at Winston Churchill High School where she swam her first season on the team as a bulldog. Maya competed in Divisionals, Metros, Regionals, and States, and earned a varsity letter. She started winter swimming with Joe Flaherty’s Dolphins, then moved to RMSC advanced juniors, and now swims with NCAP in Silver 1 at Georgetown Prep.

This is Maya’s 8th year swimming for the Nessies and her second year coaching after volunteering last summer with the younger Nessies, mainly preteamers. Maya looks forward to a great season both in and out of the pool.

Jerry Lu

Assistant Coach

Jerry has swum for RMSC and ASA for a total of 7 years now. This summer will be his fourth year as a Nessie swimmer and second year as a coach for the pre-team. He had a blast coaching the younger kids on  the team last year and is more than thrilled to come back and have another great season with all the Nessies.
