Head Program Coach - Jay Thorpe

Coach Jay hails from Akron, Ohio where he began his swim career at the age of 6 at Portage Country Club. Developing a love for swimming, he began swimming AAU and YMCA. Coach Jay was a high school All-American and 6 time collegiate All-American. Coach Jay lives is Bristow, VA with his wife Wendy and has two children J.D. and Sydney.

Coach Jay has coached at various levels including:

Piedmont Tsunamis Swim Team
Beginning his 7th season as Head Coach and Program Director.

  • 2013 PWSL Red Division Champions
  • 10+ League Records
  • Broke 49 of 67 team records in 4 years.
  • Direct all indoor and outdoor training activities
  • Head Coach for team consisting of 350 competitive and developmental swimmers.

Battlefield High School
Was named 2012 Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year. 12 High School All-Americans, 14 Academic All-Americans, 4 Virginia State Champions, 1 State record

USA Swim Coach
10+ years – Coached various club teams, most recently with QDD (Quantico Devil Dolphins) – 50+ Sectional Qualifiers, 30+ Zone Championship Qualifiers, 100+

Freedom Frogs
3 years – Special Olympics Head Coach – 30+ State Champions, 1 World Games    qualifier.

 

Coach Nina TremolsAssistant Head Coach - Nina Tremols

Returning as assistant head coach for the Tsunamis this summer is Nina Tremols. This will be Nina's 10th year as a Tsunami and  9th year as a coach. Nina began competitive swimming at the age of 7 and from then on gained a broad background in the sport. Nina was a member of the Battlefield HS swim team where she earned a state title and record in the 200 Medley Relay and was named team MVP her senior year. She was also a Junior National team member for Nation's Capital Swim Club. In 2017, Nina completed her swimming career at James Madison University. As a Duke, Nina was named a  JMU Athletics Director Scholar Athlete and holds All-Time Top 10 Times for the Lady Dukes in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, and 100 butterfly. Nina will begin studying to become a doctor of physical therapy this fall at Florida Gulf Coast University. 

 

Evan BrandtAssistant Coach - Evan Brandt
Evan Brandt will be returning for his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Piedmont Tsunamis. Evan joined the Tsunami Nation in 2006 and fell in love with the sport of swimming, especially his favorite stroke, butterfly. He was a Junior National qualifier and member of Occoquan Swimming's National Training Group. He was also a VHSL State Swim and Dive Championship qualifier and captain of the Battlefield High School Varsity Swim Team. Coach Evan currently attends the University of Virginia, where he studies mathematics and is working towards a Master's degree in Education. Evan is also a very active member of the club swim team at U.Va. and has qualified for the Collegiate Club Swim & Dive National Championship.
