Coach Doug is excited to build a competitive swim team in North Charleston from the bottom up that will be moving to the new DD2/City of North Charleston aquatics center in a few short years. He looks forward to once again be working alongside Coach John Lupton wih whom he shared a pooldeck for many years at Mount Pleasant Swim Club.
Doug has spent nearly 20 years working with athletes of all ages and levels in the Charleston area. He got his start in the CCAA summer swim league as the head coach for the Newington Tiger Sharks and Summerville YMCA for 3 years. Following that he started coaching high school athletes over a 10 year period at Goose Creek, Summerville and Wando. His Wando swim teams won multiple state team championships. At Summerville, he won the Region Coach of the Year Award. While coaching high school, Doug also coached Mount Pleasant Swim Club from 2005-2013. He was named the SC Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year and was a Zone coach multiple times. After his years with MPSC, Coach Doug was an assistant coach for the College of Charleston for 2 years before the team was disbanded for lack of funding. Currently he coaches the Palmetto Masters swim team at Danny Jones. Palmetto Masters was recently recognized by U.S. Masters Swimming as the Local Club of the Year, and Doug was awarded the Kerry O'Brien award for his work developing Masters swimming.
Doug attributes his success in coaching to the many, many special athletes that have surrounded him. He has trained athletes who competed at Olympic Trials and who have gone on to the best colleges around the nation, as well as eight-year-olds with hopes of competing at city meet. Regardless of the level, the will of these swimmers to reach their goals has inspired him throughout his journey as a coach.
Doug is a graduate of The Ohio State University and a big Buckeye football fan outside the pool. His daughter Paige will be attending Clemson next year and his older daughter Courtney, a former Rock Hill YMCA swim team coach, will be graduating from Winthrop. Doug and his wife Stephanie, owner of KFR Services in Summerville, will be married 25 years this coming September.
